Subject: Metal Filings in Front Differential
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 Full Time 4WD Dodge Dakota with the 4.7 liter.

About every 4 months I top off my Front and Rear Differential fluid. This last time I checked it, I noticed a TON of metal filings in the front differential. Anyone have any ideas what could have gotten chewed up in it with no loss or power or performance and no strange noises? I have about 130K miles on it with NO PROBLEMS! I was going to get it flushed out, but they wanted $110 to "flush it out and reseal it". I am thinking of doing it myself for about $35 (Fluid + Gasket material...)

Yeah mine did that because somehow water got in the diff. plug. Those rubber plugs sre crap if you ask me, they should be replaced after 50,000 or get the screw in kind with chrome covers, that what i did.....but the metal chunks where the teeth eating each other($500 to fix mine) might as well upgrade to better gears as well

I've never taken the cover off, just always topped it off. Thanks for the input about the teeth eating each other, I figured that's what it was. I might just flush it and refill it... I wonder if I have to buy the dodge gasket material or if any ol' brand will do...

Where did you get your differential cover?? Can you recommend a place? I would want black metal, not chrome, but the metal plug sounds like a good idea. Anyone know where to get the dodge gasket material??
