Subject: RPM Jump IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 4x4 Quad cab with the 5.9. Here's the problem...
When I am on the freeway going approx. 65-70mph at @ 2000 RPM, I will notice sudden jumps in the RPMs. It will jump anywhere 100 to 300 RPMs. I can notice this problem more in CC, but it doesn't have to be in CC to occur. I took it in to the mechanic, and it wasn't throwing out any codes. Because no error codes came up, my mechanic says it is a tranny problem. HELP!

Message: your torque converter lockup is screwed up. not sure why, but i would check the wire connectors for it.

Message: Yes, that's a typical symptom for a bad TPS, and no it won't throw a code.

Message: Today I noticed my RPMs decrease to 600, then jump back up to 1000 while idling at a red light. Odd. I really don't think it is a transmission problem. I think I will replace the TPS and see if that helps.

Message: if the tps were bad, most likely it wont go into overdrive what so ever. rarely does a tps go bad, and overdrive still works.

Message: BrianGSC, mine was doing the exact same thing and changing out the TPS cured it! Bought the TPS at Napa for around $30

Message: my 2001 ram 5.9 did the same thing
first they changed the TPS and a bad U Joint
that cured it for about a week
i then took it back and took the guy for a test drive and it did it while he was driving
they updated i think the vavle body and a few other tranny components and it has never done it since
mine would always do it under load, ie: going up hills or towing the snowmobiles

Message: OK...I replaced the TPS, and now everything is working OK. I drove it for about 20 miles, and it worked fine. I have a big road trip on Monday so that will be the true test...
Thanks everyone for your input!

Message: Had same prob after removing the TPS connector when changing plugs. 2000-2150 at 70mph while in cruise. Did it when out of OD too. Read posts here and cleanned the connector contacts and put it on and off the connector a few times. Now all is fine. Glad I didn't need tranny work, which is what I suspected,,,
