Subject: quick 5.2/5.9 question...

Message:
I just had a private mechanic tell me that there's a serious problem with the fan on my 2000 5.2 that it shouldn't turn freely when the engine is off.

If you are reading this and you can go out to your truck right now... please just pop the hood and see if you can spin the large/primary fan that's attached to the engine block (not the smaller electric fan that's directly against the radiator).

He says it should only turn with the engine on. I just want to know before I go to the dealer and make a fool of myself. Thanks.

your mechanic is a dumb a$$. the fan will turn freely with the engine off if you spin it with your hand. it is attached to a fan clutch. that fan clutch is heat sensitive. when it heats up, the fan clutch tightens up, in an manner of speaking, and the fan spins faster.
bottom line... yes you can spin it freely.

Find another mechanic. This guy is worthless. Don't ever take your truck back to him. If he doesn't screw something up he is going to be screwing you on his billing.

Splitting hairs here, but a properly functioning fan will spin with the engine off, but not exactly freely. There should be some resistance, but not a lot. If you were to give it a good flick, it'd stop moving in less than one full rotation. If it spins several times, it's wasted. If it won't move at all, it's wasted. So, it may be just a mis-communication in what is meant by the term "freely".
