I have 2002 Quad Cab with a 4.7. When my truck sits for a period of time, cools off, it take several cranks of the engine to start running. When its warmed-up it starts just fine. Any idea what could be?

It's most likely the check valve in your fuel pump binding up and sticking open thereby letting the fuel pressure bleed off back into your tank. So when you go to start the engine it takes a few seconds to build the pressure in your system back up. You can test this theory by getting in your truck and turning the key to 'on' without starting your truck and waiting a couple of seconds then off and back on. After waiting a couple of seconds,try and start the engine. If it starts with only a couple of cranks, the fuel pressure had bled off. If you have a fuel pressure gauge it's a lot easier to test the pressure though. The gauge should read 49 psi with the engine running and after you shut the engine off the pressure should be maintained within a couple psi after 30 minutes. Anymore pressure loss is an unacceptable rate of pressure loss.
I like to run a 50/50 mixture of STP fuel injector cleaner and Marvel Mystery Oil every once in a while to keep the fuel system lubed so the check valve doesn't stick. The mixture isn't harmful to your engine or fuel system. Good luck!

Marvel Mystery Oil is available almost anywhere automotive supplies are sold. I know AutoZone, Checker, Pep Boys has it. It's in a red container with black lettering. It use to come in a rectangular metal can and had an old fashion look to it but, recently they've switched to a Red plastic bottle with a long, slender spout for easy pouring in tight places.

I have put a pressure tester to my truck and that wasnt't the problem. Also yesterday I changed the cam sensor, because I heard that could be the problem....Nope wasnt the cam sensor..I still have the problem...Hellllppppp

Sorry about that Rob C...I have a 2002 Dakota Extend cab SLT. I also have the same problem with starting my truck that PSUVICTOR has. I have put a pressure tester on the fuel rail, and everything tested ok. I heard it could be a cam sensor, so I replaced it. That didnt work. I also heard it could be a crank sensor, I guess that would be the next thing to try. If you have any suggestions, they would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!!

i agree with Rob. if the truck sits for a while, instead of turning the key to start right away, just turn it to the "on" position. that way, if the fuel check or injectors are leaking, it will build pressure back up and should start right up after the fuel pump shuts off.

Joe, are you saying that you connected the fuel pressure gauge, started the engine and verified 49 psi then shut off the engine and the fuel pressure remained close to 49 psi for 30 minutes?
If it's the crank position sensor that's going bad, many times just reseating the connector will get it to work again for a short period of time. Try that the next time it won't start.

This problem seems to be getting worse. Now it it is hard to start everytime...with longer cranking time, where it used to be 3-5 seconds of cranking, now it is 7-9 seconds of cranking...Thank you RobC for at least giving me some options,I am definetly going to change the crank sensor, but has this problem happened to anyone else? Any "Sure" fixes to alleviate this. I hate to keep spending money,cause I dont really have it, but I have seen this problem happens quite alot on this board, but nothing I have tried, or read, has come up with, or wrote, how something stopped this problem.

oh I fogot, yes RobC the pressure did stay up after a half an hour, and daddio, I try the 3-time cycle of the ignition, and that has no effect on the starting of the engine.

Yeah, throwing parts at it is not a good way to troubleshoot. It gets to be expensive and you don't really learn much until the problem is fixed. It's like reading a book hoping to find the ending right away, you get to the end glad to finish the book but, feel a little cheated that you had to read all those chapters in between.
I'd try reseating the CPS next time to see if that helps at all. When you replaced the cam sensor, did it have a spacer or washer on it that wasn't on the new sensor? Some earlier 4.7's had a problem where the head was over machined where the cam sensor mounts, causing the sensor to be too close to the tone wheel or even touch it, causing the engine to have poor performance or hard starting. You might look into this, the chances are pretty remote but, you shouldn't overlook anything related to powertrain control when troubleshooting a powertrain problem. Just be logical about it.
