Message: Joe,
I don't have a 97 318, I have a 1992 4x4 withte 318. If you have gone this long without replacing your fuel pump your lucky. Mine started to act act up at about 75,000 miles, gas gauge went out first.
Here are other things to consider, fuel sync sensor in distributor, rotor, cap, wires and plugs. Replace the Oxygen sensor you are overdue.
The crankshaft position sensor should be replaced also.
Remove the Throttle body remove the sensors and give it a good cleaning. Be careful with the IAC on the back of the throttlebody. Clean this area on the throttle body. It can carbon up and cause a ruff idle or intermittent idle and not idle at all. Good Luck.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: While I certainly agree you should replace all belts, hoses, plugs, cap, rotor, and change all fluids (tranny fluid, coolant, differentials) and also clean the throttle body - I see no reason to replace any sensors other than the O2 oxygen sensor(s). Crankshaft and coil pickup sensors can last the life of the vehical - and usually throw a trouble code when they fail. I also see no reason to randomly replace a fuel pump or oil pump. I drive my trucks 150-200K before replacing them - I tow alot - and I've never replaced fuel pumps/oil pumps etc. I replaced one crank sensor, but oddly enough the sensor didn't really fail - the wiring chaffed on the bellhouseing and shorted. You could expect a water pump soon (or maybe not) and when you replace the water pump it makes sense to replace the timing chain - they are not known for longevity on the 3.9/5.2/5.9

Message: I have heard from a very trusted source not to change your tranny fluid unless it smells burnt. I am also very weary about replacing any sensors. Price is always sky high, and I can never tell a difference except for the check engine ligh shutting off

Message: All of the fluids and filters would be a good start; engine oil, tranny fluid, power steering fluid, Tranny Fluid, diff lube, TRANNY FLUID, brake fluid, antifreeze, Oh BTW,,, did I mention the Transmission Fluid, filter and band adjustment? If any of these have not been changed they are due.
You also might as well check or change the belts, hoses, wiper blades, bulbs, brake pads and shoes....
Heck, just look at the owners manual maintenance schedule,,, if something has not been done, it probably needs to be done.

Message: Tranny fluid and Diff changed at 50,000 replaced cap rotor wires and plugs oil changes every 3000-5000 miles....basically all normal maintenance stuff performed ....my most concern is the non normal maintenance parts ie fuel injectors, pump, timing chain etc etc...when do these types of parts typically go bad and what symptoms if any are displayed prior to failure?
This is my only vehicle and I need to get at least another 100,000 miles out of it without breaking down...
Thanks again
Joe
