I have edelbrock valve covers with to breathers, one on each cover.
I curently do not run with the pcv, is there a negative to doing this?

The PCV system tries to draw out the bypass gasses and prevent overpressure of the crank case. It also contaminates the incoming air charge with these same gasses. It's original intention was to improve emissions. You may not be able to pass emissions without it.

I live in FL, so no emission worries here. Would you say it is better to run the dual breathers, i think i read that some where.

Brian G is 100% correct - Also, all the stagnant smoke and gasses will leave residue in your engine. You definately want some kind of vacuum on the top of your motor.

Even at the track you need to have some sort of way to get all of the bypass gasses out of the block ... .. if fuel vapor mix with your crankcase oil it starts to turn into like a acid... you dont want that in your block/bearings .....

It is not "absolutely" necessary, but very highly recommended and fairly important. In fact, most dragsters use more sophisticated devices to achieve the same effect. The most common being pipes plumbed into both headers to form a "Y", connected also to either the head or the valve cover. As the exhaust flows through the header, it creates a vacuum via the "y pipe" (the same principal as draining a water bed) and helps the rings seal by applying that vacuum to the crankcase. This makes more power by cutting down on blow-by and evacuating gasses from the crankcase. So yes, definitely at the track. Remember, an engine is basically a big "air pump", the more efficiently it pumps air (e.g. the better it seals) the better it runs and more power it makes. Nothing is absolutely necessary but eating, drinking liquids and breathing.
Your friend is not necessarily a moron. As .boB stated above, it does contaminate the air intake charge with these gasses, so on a smaller or weaker motor it may seem to have more power without it simply because it's getting cooler, cleaner, denser air. In the long run though it's not worth it, unless you do a lot of regular internal maintenance on your engine. On a motor with any size or power, I really doubt it would "help" your performance at all to remove it.
One more thing, make sure your friend isn't thinking about the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. That thing is totally optional and can definitely hurt performance. That may be what .boB was thinking of also (It WAS designed strictly for emissions purposes). It will be located on the intake manifold. Back to work...

yeah went to a pcv valve system again, can now ride with windows up without getting smogged out from the gases leakin.
