Subject: what makes an R/T, an R/T?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99' 5.9 R/T Ext. Cab, but it has regular dakota rims on it, not R/T rims and also on the side it says sport (says 5.9 R/T on the tailgate) so the question is, which of these features makes my truck an R/T? (or not)

does it actually have a 5.9?
it should definitely NOT have Sport decals.
what makes an R/T?
5.9, 2wd, factory lowered, 3.92 / 9.25 rearend. i think that's about it.

Run your VIN through here: it will tell you a summary of the truck and what it is.

As well, I believe the 6th or 8 character in the VIN should be a Z.

Maybe, but I did see an R/T with sport rims on a dealer lot. True R/T in every respect but the guy must have changed the rims along the way, maybe had some blinin' rims on it, went to sell/trade and had gotten rid of the stock R/Ts, had to find some Dak rims and ended up with those from a sport.

Here are a few things to look for that will tell you it's an R/T:

1: There will be no chrome or black plastic on the exterior except for the side view mirrors and door handles. Everything else is body/paint color. The SPORT models have black plastic on the front and rear bumpers.

2: It will have a large chrome exhaust tip that is approx. 18"long and is cut at about a 45 degree angle.

3: Look under the hood at the white decal on the radiator support. It will tell you the engine size. It has to be 5.9L!!!!!

4: 17"rims with 255/55/17 tires.

5: Painted fender flares on all R/T's. Later on (2001-pressent) pretty much all of the dakotas had painted fender flares except for the base model. The SXT model had flares but they weren't painted in most cases.

6: Lowered factory suspension

7: Factory rear sway bar. The R/T is the only Dakota with a rear sway bar standard. I'm not sure, but I don't think it is even a factory option on the other models. If you want a factory sway bar on an SLT or Sport you have to get a MOPAR Performance aftermarket kit and install it.

8: 9-1/4" rear axle (12-bolt). Count the bolts on the rear differential cover and it should have 12 bolts holding it on. If it has 10 or less it is NOT an R/T. The 9-1/4 was available as an option on the other models, but the R/T only came with the 9-1/4.

9: 3.92 gears.... Look at the rear cover on the rear axle once again. There is a small black metal tag behind one of the bolts. It will have the gear ratio stamped on it. If it says anything other than 3.92 it is NOT an R/T.

10: Fog/driving lights mounted in the front air dam. ALL R/T's have fog lights in the 2 round cutouts in the airdam. Other models had them also, but they were ususally options. All the SLT's and R/T's had them. If it doesn't have them it's NOT an R/T.

11: External transmission cooler. All Dakotas equiped with the HD Towing Package has this, and all R/T's have it. There will be a small cooler in front of the radiator and the A/C Condensor that is about 1/3 the size of the A/C Condensor. It is behind the air dam. All R/T's have this.
If it's not there.....no R/T!

The list goes on and on and on and on..... Basically, if it does not have just about every available option, Cruise Control, CD Player, Tilt, P-Windows, P-Door locks, Auto-dimming rear view mirror, overhead display that may or may not have the temp display and trip meter and gas mileage, power mirrors, tachometer, and sliding back glass, chances are it is NOT an R/T. That is unless someone special ordered the thing. The R/T option automatically includes most of the options standard on the SLT and the Sport package and combines them with a few options unique to the R/T like the 17"wheels and rear sway bar. That's why the R/T is so much more expensive. It's more than just a 360 in place of a 318.

I have a 5.2L dodge dakota. It a solar yellow 1999 and has a R/T stripe on the rear. Does the 318's have the Z in the 8th place on the VIN. I was asking because mine has a Y. It has R/T rims. If anyone knows if the R/T stripe is from the factory can you tell me.

Jacob, if your Dak doesn't have a Z as the 8th letter in the VIN, it's not an R/T. Dakota R/T's came from the factory with the 5.9L engine (360cid) not the 318, and they didn't come stock with the stripe on the bed.

The 92-98 or 99 daks had 5.2 engines with the r/t package. I'd look it up and give you some real details but it's not worth my time. So yes, some 5.2 daks are considered r/t's.
