Subject: 2000 5.9 running hot, can't find leaks. IP: Logged
Message: Hi. I have a 2000 Dak QC 5.9 and last time I took it in for an oil change they said the top hose was leaking. Well, I took it home, changed the top hose, and checked coolant levels a couple times. But it still gets hot, it gets to just below the 210 mark, then I freak out and turn the heater on and it drops down to 190-195. I've looked a couple times, can't find any more leaks, don't see any on the ground, yet it gets hot and every once in awhile, maybe a couple times a day, I get a faint whiff of coolant. Any ideas?

Message: Did you change or check the thermostat? If it's clogged or not opening all the way, it would cause your problems.
Did you drill a hole in your thermostat? A small hole in the plate helps to relieve air pockets. One or two heat cycles and it's purged.
Did you check the lower hose? If it's collapsing, you need to replace it. Generally speaking if you can easily squeeze it closed with your hand, you need to replace it.

Message: It can be a lot of things, waterpump, bad fan clutch, clogged radiator,or cracked head, these heads have a habit of developing cracks between the valves ,sometimes you cant see the cracks until you take the valves out ,do yourself a favor and do a compression test this should tell you something.

Message: just below 210 is not excessively hot. the first thing i'd look at is that t/stat housing gasket. i think it was a common for '00's i know i ha dto change mine because it was leaking. not a lot but enough to, as you say, "catch a wiff" every now and then.

Message: Same here, once in awhile you get that sweet taste. T-stat housing gasket, a bit of a pain to get to, though.

Message: Ok, the smell was the tstat housing gasket, I changed that and the tstat while I was at it. No leaks now, but I think I figured out what's going on. It still goes to 210 in heavy traffic. My 98 5.2L I had before this would never go above 195 or so, but I remember that I would hear the roar of a fan kick in much earlier (electric fan? I didn't know my old one had one unless it was on the front of the radiator, the 00 5.9L has one, but at the front of the rad). If I'm sitting in my 00, it kicks in but not until it hits that 210 mark, then drops pretty quick. Is this the electric fan I hear and should it be coming on this much later in the 00 5.9?

Message: After reading through other posts, it looks like it is the clutch fan that roars into gear, should it be kicking in so late on the 5.9 vs the 5.2 though? It would seem also that 210 is ok, but I would think the constant temp change would be bad on the engine.

Message: i'd say anything below 210 is ok. i run a 195 t/stat and no clutch fan and mine will go as high(idling for a 1/2 hr.) as the lower left corner of the 2 on 210. and it's been in the upper 80's/lower 90's here the last month.

Message: Hey .boB,
You mentioned here and in my post about drilling a small hole in the t-stat before installing it. What size should the hole be drilled, and is there a "best" spot to place it? Do you have a diagram or photo, perhaps?
Also, for my education: is this how our t-stats are serviced, or is this an inexpensive modification someone "stumbled upon" that provides a beneficial result?
