Subject: PCV system IP: Logged
Message: 99 5.2 My friend told me if I take off the PCV and plug the holes it will increase HP but he could be full of sh*t. Also he said it would be worse on gas mileage but i dont care about that i want more HP but how much more would it be, it cant be that much but i'm willing to try if its true.

Message: Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. The crank case builds up pressure as you run it. If you try and seal it, the pressure will build up until something gives. Probably a valve cover gasket, but could be a rear main seal.
The pressure is created by by products of combustion that sneak past the rings. The PCV system was designed to create some negative pressure in the crank case, and route some of those byproducts back in to the cylinders to decrease emissions. Unfortunatly, this may cost you a little bit of power by contaminating the air:fuel charge. Muscle cars of the mid sixties just had two open breathers, one on each valve cover.
If you really want to make power, install a vacume pump. That's worth 15-20hp.
