Subject: Radiator Gurgling IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys...I've noticed recently that after driving my 4.7 around for a bit that the radiator gurgles when I park her in the garage. I looked at the fluid level and yeah, it was pretty low so obviously I need to fill it up which I am in a minute, but is that an indication of a bigger problem? I've never noticed a leak but I do smell radiator fluid every now and then.
Also, how easy is it to flush the system myself? I noticed a kit at Walmart yesterday but is this a total waste of money? I have 100k on my 2000 and haven't flushed it once...I think it'd be a good time to do it. Is there any detailed instructions on how to do it?
Thanks..

Message: The gurgling noise happens when your radiator cools and sucks back coolant from the overflow tank. It is normal.
Don't know about coolant flush, never personally done it.

Message: you need to find that leak and take care of it. when you repair the leak you can flush it then & refill.

Message: A wiff of rad fluid every now and then is normal I think, since your radiator overflow tank is vented to atmosphere, and would certainly be noticeable inside a garage. If you have a leak (indicated by a strong, constant rad fluid smell,) and you can't find it, check your carpet around the floor vents for moisture. Also, do your windows get a greasy film on the inside? If the answer to these is 'yes' then you probably have a leaking heater core. My condolances if you do. If that's the case, search these boards, there are many posts describing the trials and tribulations (and some really helpful tips) regarding the notorious 'leaking heater core'

Message: If the engine is sucking in rad fluid through a blown head gasket, you should be leaving a plume of white smoke when the engine is running! Your oil should also be noticeably contaminated, discolored to a milky appearance,
...ask me how I know

Message: Lemme guess you ran with one for a while, or you've seen it in others vehicles? You're right, but thats only one type of head gasket leak. Internal and External. Internals are common in almost all Chryslers(dodge plymoth mercedes and of course chryslers for those who dont know) and in a lot of GM's especially their 2.2 Ecotechs. thats where like you said, the smoke, the smell, the milk chocalate colored oil, and the radiator bubbling. An external leak, well if you dont know what it is you shouldnt be looking underneath the hood. (IE my gf :-p) Those are extremely common in ALL fords, especially the 4.6L engines. (Rustangs, Interceptors/Crown Vics, thunderchickens, etc).
at least all this information goes in my 5 years experience working on cars.

Message: Yes, you're correct. I had an internal blown head gasket on my 87 Turbocoupe 2.3L, easy fix and generally an easy engine to work with. Smoked for several hours after the repair since the cat and mufflers were filled with coolant -very embarrassing! Also had a recurring external coolant leak from a blown manifold gasket on my 80 Cutlass Salon, with the 260 Olds v8. No tailpipe smoke, just a lot of steam under the hood. That one was just poor design, with not enough bolts located nearby to maintain a good seal around the coolant channel. After the third leak, I fixed it permanently by cutting out the bad portion of the gasket and making a separate section out of slightly thicker brass shim ...heh, I almost forgot about my Cutlass!

Message: It's not the original fluid...just haven't had it flushed. It only gargled when it was off but just had it flushed the other day and no more gargling. I do get a film on my windshield but I just attribute that to never cleaning the inside. My heater blows hot so I'd imaging that rules out the heater core? No smoke out the pipes but my exhaust smells really rich lately...probably my cat going.

Message: It's more than likely an exhaust leak. Try this: run the care at 2000 rpm for 3 mins, or drive it around town, which ever u prefer. get out of the truck and look underneath. if the cats glowing red and you can light a stogie on it, that cats bad. otherwise it just sounds like an exhaust leak

Message: here's another thing...since I installed my MBRP cat back exhaust and cold air intake when the tranny kicks down at full throttle it sounds like a loud fart...seriously, that's the best way to descripe it. I've checked for vaccum leaks and found nothing...it's been doing this for years.

Message: Its definately an exhaust leak. Have all your pipes and gaskets checked. any kind of sound that gives an indication of air rushing will tell u its an exhaust leak. from the smell though, it sounds like its pre-cat. also with the whole being before ur O2 sensor it will make it biased rich. IE air rushing in the exhaust pipe dude to the imbalance in pressure will make ur O2 sensor think the engines burning lean and will try to correct it by adding more fuel, hense probably why u smell hydrocarbons

Message: would this explain my awesome gas mileage of 12.8 mpg?! well, i'll get under it and see what i can find. it just threw the 455 code at me yesterday but i doubt it would have anything to do with this. i get the evap code every now and then (whichever the other number is) but never got this one. i'm sure it's my gas cap but we'll see.

Message: actually yeah that would explain a low gas milage. with your O2 sensor sensing more air than normal, it will think your burning lean so itll dump more fuel into your engine. check your gaskets, and look for holes in your exhaust if u must look.

Message: I noticed again yesterday that the rad is still gurgling after I shut it off...I flushed the fluid last week. I changed the oil the other day and it looked normal...dark, not milky. Is it normal to have it gurgle a little while it's cooling down? It was a lot louder earlier on when I first posted but the rad fluid was pretty low.

Message: Hmm. Im not sure, might be the radiator cap, but this is a one thats leaving me stumped. Im not sure, ill ask my coworkers and see what they think. Try getting your cooling system pressure tested along with the cap. not really sure until i could see what the pressure test would tell. If you could get it tested and then post again. Ill see what i can do

Message: Try changing the rad cap. A similar problem happened to my dad's 89 dodge 3/4 ton truck (360 v-8 4 spd stnd :-) ). After a long drive it sounded like there was a big pot of potatoes boiling under the hood. Problem disapeared after a new rad cap was put on. Hope this helps!
