Subject: fuel filter in tank IP: Logged
Message: With 53,000 miles on my 5.9L Dakota, I
thought it was time for a fuel filter. But it is in
the gas tank. Should I remove it and splice
one in under the hood? Please advise.
Thanks.

Message: From my 2004 Service Manual CD:
"DESCRIPTION
A combination fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator is used on all engines. It is located on the top of the fuel pump module. A separate frame mounted fuel filter is not used with any engine. Both fuel filters (at bottom of fuel pump module and within fuel pressure regulator) are designed for extended service. They do not require normal cheduled maintenance. Filters should only be replaced if a diagnostic procedure indicates to do so."
To me, "extended service" means a coarse mesh screen that won't catch the small stuff that does the bad things to the injectors.
If your gas supply line routing is similar to my 2004's, you too can install a good in-line fuel filter, inside the frame rail on the driver side just forward of the gas tank. I just cut out a section of hard line, and put in a REAL filter.
Just remember fuel pressure is 50PSI +/- 5PSI, so choose your filter accordingly.
