Subject: 4.7 start-up idle speed IP: Logged
Message: Have a '00 4.7 auto that starts up then the engine immediately flares up to 2,000 rpm before idling back. This happens before the oil pressure rises and can't be a good thing.
This only started recently and nothing had been recently changed. Any ideas?

Message: My 00 does that every now and then (though the oil pressure is built up as soon as I stop cranking it) It scared the $HIT out if me when i put it in reverse and it sudenly tried to "escape" on me lol..
Does your truck sometiems run rough, then rev up like that? It almost acts like it's (for lack of better terms) "clearing it's throat".. like it's loaded up and blows the excess fuel out.
It hasn't done it lately, but it probably will again.. I have cleaned my TB and IAC, and habitualy run B-12 Chemtool in the gas tank at every oil change.. this does NOT help. I even replaced my TPS sensor to no avail... I think it's just something screwy in the programming or something.. I read somewhere that the coolant temp sensor, or the MAP sensor can cause a rich startup.. I haven't looked into these yet though.
Just my .02

Message: 01, 4.7, manual.
Unlike the olden days, of course I don't pump the accelrator a few like a carbed motor, you probably don't either, just before you start it.
Mine goes up to about 1200-1500, a second or two, and then back to about 6-700.
Ambient air temp may have something to do with it, but mine does not go to 2 grand right at start up by itself. Sounds like others do to, is it an auto?

Message: I also have a 2000 4.7 and mine has done this as well for the past few years. Sometimes if I don't give it a little gas while it is rumbling it'll die. It levels off after 10-15 seconds or so. I too had it try to "escape" on me earlier in the week backing down the drive and into the street. I thought I was going to end up in my neighbor's bush across the street. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.
