I'm the owner of a 92 Dak LE 5.2 w/ 152K in milage. Ive gotten lots of useful information from sifting through past posts here, but this time I couldn't quite sinc up my syptoms to a recommended course of action.
About three months ago I had a problem with RPMs cycling up and down at freeway speeds (65-70 mph) on the order of about 800 rpms. Checked the tranny fluid at that time and while it measured about a quart low when hot I didn't think much of it as I had had no problems in the three years of ownership. Just filled w a castrol ATF 3+ product and let it go at that. Cycling did not abate and to prevent it I engaged the OD shutoff on trips where the problem surfaced. I also have noticed a loud clunk when turning the wheel hard to the right at very low speeds or standing still, never while actually on the road. That's the background.
Two days ago I noticed a slight vibration that became quite pronounced and would resonate in the cab. This anomoly occurs at approx 1500 rpm in first gear only and will maintain itself if you only accelerate to 12 to 15 mph and never leave first. there is a slight shudder during deceleration at about 10 mph, which is similar to the slight shudder under normal acceleration.
Turned my attention to this yesterday and did the following. Aired all tires, three were low, two by about 4 lbs, third(right rear) was low by about 10 lbs. Added 1qt oil to engine. Check u joint for play, found none, checked all wheels for loose lugnuts, everything AOK. Spun rear wheels w back off the ground, no sign of excessive brake wear nor any grinding from dif or excessive force needed to spin.
Drove truck, at this time also noticed(without three screaming kids in truck) clicking noises from front end that I could not place any meaning to. was not occuring at shifting, consistantly w bumps in road or turning. When I pulled in the driveway I ran the shifter through all the gears and became aware that shifting into several gear positions (N,P,2,1) produced a simliar click. R also produced this click along w a thud that I associate w normal reverse gear engagement. Ran it through all postions several times.
This morning en route to church the vibration was completely gone even after the temp gage was up to normal running. Did notice that 55 to 60 mph was running at 2700 to 3000 rpm. It did that on the way home as well, but just inside our subdivision I started to notice that low speed shudder again on acceleration. Not like it was yesterday and day before, but noticable.
We have been saving to get a second operational vehicle, and I'll take all the help you can give me. I'd hate to take our downpayment money and put it on a tranny, but if that is what it takes... Any other helpful thoughts or advice appreciated.
