Message: hi, i've been noticing a bit of play in the driveline, or what i would imagine it to feel like.
i crawled under my truck the other day, and with the transmission in park, and parking brake on, i can rotate the drive shaft about 20 degrees.
of course, i can't tell which end is loose, but i'd guess they both are- neither the ring and pinion nor the park pawl should allow that much play, should they?

Message: The park pawl will allow that much. The problem is the diff. Time for a rebuild. If you have LSD and the gears are good, expect to pay about $800'ish.

Message: Why a rebuild? and is that bad? I have a 99 dakota 4x4 and i have that major driveshaft play as well. It drives fine, its just that i was messing with it like stan said. I only messed w. it because only when i put the car into reverse ( automatic) the drivline clunks hardcore. It makes a "clunk/bam" sound when the tranny goes into reverse, u can tell its the driveshaft cathnig gear/resistance since it has that major play around. my truck has 87K miles on it, and its been doing it since i bought it with 73k on it, and it hasnt gotte nworse?
So is it really that big of a deal?

Message: The diff will gradually wear out, until one day it goes "bang", and your stuck on the side of the road. When it finally breaks like that, you'll have to replace everything, since the carriers and axles will be chewed up. If you do it now, it's a simple rebuild - if it's not too late.

Message: Damn, i have no money left after replacing prtty much the whole front end.. Im only 18 and going to college.. I dont know what to do about fixing that. The dodge is a great truck and i bet if i was older and bought it brand new it would be absolutly great truck, but at this mileage its been a damn money pit. I should have bought an older toyota truck liek my friend who bought a 93 toyota 4x4, not one damn thing wrong with it.

Message: No kidding, I'd like to think Toyota's or what not dont last any longer than a Dodge lets say, but from all my experiences, i should have gotten a Toyota pickup or what not, I have replaced 3k in parts for this crappy truck. I feel like one day its just gonig to blow up. Tie rod ends broek on my twice, one going 50mph on an on ramp, yeah not good, all ball joints, brakes twice, ear susepnsino probs, tranny probs, i hate it now actually
