Subject: Starting Problem IP: Logged
Message: I own a 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT 5.2 V8 w/ about 84K miles. Recently I have had intermittent problems starting the engine. When I turn the key sometimes all I get is a click. I then will try 6 or 7 times more getting the same click but no engine turn. Then I will eventually get the starter engaged (and chug) and then eventually the engine will turn over. I can't predict when this will happen but it tends to do it every two weeks or so, especially when the engine is cold (in the morning). It will tend to do it for the rest of the day or maybe two days in a row and then the problem will cease.
The battery is good, jumping the battery does not help to any major degree. A service center says that it seems that the voltage is somehow being diverted and they could not dupllicate the problem to diagnose it.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Could it be a bad or intermittent starter solenoid? Outside of this, the engine runs great. I am bamboozled. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Message: Good call, DaveR
Get yours fixed yet? This sounds like about the same thing to me, although if it's also having a hard time even cranking once it engages, there may be some starter motor damage.

Message: start with the easy way....if you use jumper cables from another car and it starts right up numerous times then its your battery....if you use jumper cables and you still get a click then its prob your starter solenoid.

Message: I had my battery tested at a battery shop and it wasn't that besides a lot of corosion. I changed to a different terminal thinking it wasn't charging enough, but that didn't do it. I finally broe down and bought an new starter and put it in. Only took about an hour and didn't even have to get the air tools out. Sounds like the same thing though and once it's fixed it's all about piece of mind

Message: I have a '98 Dakota with 83,000 miles. In the last month I have had a starting problem. It seems to only happen for the first start of the day. Always flooding. If I floor the pedal to the floor and crank it will usually start. Tonight however it back fired and blew the air intake up. I had scheduled to take it to a garage tomorrow. Testing the ECM and injectors. It is not a fuel pump or starter issue.

Message: I have a 1999 Dodge 1/2 ton v8 with starting problems. The engine turns over 10 - 12 times before it starts. I had it tuned at the dealer and it still starts slowly. I was told it might be a sensor. ???????

Message: Wow, great info from the dealer. Joe, try this, turn the key to "on" and wait about 3 seconds then back to "off" then "on" and wait 3 seconds then back to "off" and back to "on" look at the odometer and record any codes that come up then, try to start your truck. If it starts up right away, your fuel pump check valve is sticking and letting your fuel pressure bleed off back into your tank. If you have codes other than "done" you will need to look up the code and address those issues.
Look here: http://www.wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm
Usually if you mix Marvel Mystery oil and fuel injector cleaner then add it to your tank at your next fill up, the check valve will unstick if it's just from being dirty. The more scientific method would be to put a fuel pressure gauge on your fuel test port, start the engine and check the pressure reading then, turn off the engine and observe the pressure reading then wait 20 minutes and check your pressure reading again. Under normal conditions, the pressure should be maintained after you turn off the engine and even 20 minutes later. If it bleeds off, you have a faulty check valve. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Message: I'm having problems the last three days starting my 96 Dakota after it's sat for a while (cold start). For instance, today when I turned the key, the starter didn't engage. I tried this 3 times until the starter engaged and started the engine. I took it to a shop last night thinking it was the battery, but the battery, cords, etc are all fine. Once the truck starts, it will start the first try (until I leave the engine off for a while). It has been cold the last few days this has happened (starting from single digits to about 30 degrees outside depending on the time of day). I feel like I'm playing Russian Roulette every time I try to start the truck. Does anyone think it's my starter going bad? Also, for anyone who's replaced it, is it a difficult installation? Can I do this replacement myself, or should I leave it to a repair shop?

Message: I have a 99 Dakota 5.2 (318) and I had to put a
block heater in it to insure that it would start
every day. (not diesel). I'm in Upstate NY and it
was in the 50's yesterday, and is now in the 40's
today, so I left it unplugged last night to see if
it would start today. It did not. I plugged it
in to warm the block, but i suspect that there is
a mechanical or electrical/mechanical device that
is not working properly (choke of some sort)?? if
it's not plugged in over night. Any ideas? Thank
you in advance.

Message: My 2003 Dakota is not starting in the morning very
well. When the key is turned the the ignition
clicks and stops. It then can take about 3 to 8
clicks and turns of the key and the truck
starts.this is the first start of the day. After
the first start of the day the truck starts the
rest of the day. After it sits overnite the truck
repeats the same trouble starting. I replaced the
battery starter and the ignition switch. I am
having a hard time troubleshooting because once it
starts the problem is gone until the next day.

Message: Thank you all for your input regarding the starting problem that I had on my '99 Dakota. As it turns out, it was my coil. The fins had separated and it was drawing moisture. It would start hard when it was damp out, but start easy once the engine was warm or the outside temperature had risen. It took me while to figure it out, as i had installed a block heater in te lower radiator hose DIRECTLY BENEATH the coil, and it kept the coil warm and dry throughout the winter months, but as soon as i didn't need the block heater to be plugged in, the symptom reappeared. I called the dealer with this information and they hit the nail on the head. $30.00 (I did the install), truck runs great and starts without fail still to this day. So food for thought, if you ever suspect intermittent spark, change your coil. Mine is located on the front of the engine (passenger side), hence why the heat from the block heater that I installed, was interfering with my locating the problem in the first place. Thank you all again for your input, and I hope my experience will help someone out there with a similar issue.

Message: I have a 1998 dakota sport 5 speed v8. It won't start after sitting in the driveway for a couple of days. I'm getting plenty of battery /electrical power (I'v killed the battery trying to start it before), I replaced the fuel ignition sensor, the mechanic says its getting plenty of fuel pressure. I have towed it twice and each time by the time the truck arrives at the repair place it starts on the first try. It's driving me crazy, the mechanics are struggling to figure out why? Any thoughts (besides shooting it lol) are welcome.
