Subject: Where to get bushings? IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I've read lots of info here about squeaky bushings, and I'm having the same problems. My front sway bar bushings are causing a squeak that is driving me crazy. I was able to find the two inner bushings at a variety of stores and online, but where can I find the OUTER bushings for a 2001 4WD 4.7L/287 quad cab Dakota? No one seems to make them, not Energy Suspension, or anywhere else I can dredge up online, for that matter.
Everyone tells me a dealership, which is fine, but can someone point me to one - they don't seem to have what I need in my area and I'm willing to contact out-of-state dealers if necessary.
Thanks.

Message: SUMMIT has them as a kit. The company is PROTHANE.
It's special order, so plan on waiting 2-4 weeks.

Message: Simply squeaking doesn't mean they are worn out. Mine have almost 70K miles on them, and they are still good.
Remove them and clean well with a good soap. When you put them back on, lube them with a decent Synthetic lube.
It must be synthetic. Petroleum based lubes will damage the surface of poly bushings. If you have a lot of miles with petroleum based lubes, you may have ruined them.
I use Mobile 1 full synthetic wheel bearing grease. Lasts about a year, then you have to do it again.

Message: Thanks for the replies. I've seen two different opinions on what to do if the bushings aren't worn out - one says to use synthetic grease to lube them(would it matter if mine aren't poly, but the factory rubber ones?), and one that says to use belt dressing, to keep them from slipping or allowing the bar to rotate inside, gripping instead to allow the bushing to flex instead.
I know it's opinion, but which would be better?

Message: Or is it a matter of doing both? First degreasing and cleaning the sway bar, then cleaning and lubing the bushing, then applying belt dressing to the sway bar?
Any help would be great. Thanks.

Message: When I get home, I'll look for the receipt. No, the p/n for
the Dak's is not in the Summit catalog. A lot of stuff I get
from them isn't listed specifically for my truck & car.
I had to call Summit directly, & give them my specs. BTW,
I learned that there are 2 different size swaybars for the
truck - 28 & 32 mm if I recall. I ran into the garage while
on my phone, got 2 wrenches & quickly checked the diameter.
