Message: This is very wierd!! I've only had my Dak for about 2 months now and for the first time I had it up to 160Kmh (I'm Canadian) anyhow, as soon as it hits 160 it "bogs" down...almost like there is a governor set (that what it feels like anyway. When it happened the first time I thought maybe it was a fluke or something, so I ran I sped up again to 160 and it did it again!! Any Ideas at all what this may be??? Please help, I'm all freaked out now that something wrong with my truck. By the way heres the specs:
01 Dak CC 2x4
4.7L Auto

Message: 160Kmh equates to just under 100Mph.
You've been governed.
I read elsewhere on this forum of a way to override this, but I don't remember the procedure, and I couldn't find the thread.
Sorry.

Message: Yep, sucks ass. You can run a switch to your rear wheel speed sensor and that will shut it off but you will lose your speedo in the meantime. Been thinking of doing it myself but no need so far. Not governing out in the 1/4. Probably will this year though. We're set at 160 kmph wihich works out to 96 mph. Where about's in Canada are ya?? Kitchener Ontario here.

Message: Yup, I had my truck for 2 days and thought I blew up the engine or tranny the first time the governer kicked in.
If it's shutting down at 98 you got hosed because some Dak's shut down at 118. I got hosed twice, my 00 4.7 CC shut down at 98 and my 03 QC shuts down at 98 :-(
I'v heard that as you approach the magic number (98 or 118) you can turn the key to the start position and the truck will blow by the governer. The starter will not kick in as the computer is smart enough not to start the truck while it's in gear,,, though I have not tried this. Also putting a switch in the rearend's speed sensor and disconnecting the sensor when approaching the magic number is supposed to blow by the governor,,, though I have not tried this one either. I don't know why I have not tried either of these as I hit the governer about once a month.
This isn't just a DC think,,, there all doing it now. Just be glad that your truck does not have one of those taddle tale black boxes on board like some of the new Ford trucks.

Message: The reason why car manufactures have speed limitors or governors as you call them, is because of the speed ratings of your tires. The tires on your truck are probably touring tires which means that have a speed rating under 100 mph. Anything over the rated speed of your tire greatly increases the chance of a blowout. Because, the tire can not handle the heat generated at higher speed. Thus causing the tire to rupture or blowout.
Do a search for speed rating on tires in yahoo. You will find better explanation that what i can offer here.
If, you are gonna raise the speed limitor, buy hypertech or superchip. Make sure your tires can handle the sustained speed though. Hate to see you flip that thing over at 100+mph. Due to a blowout.

Message: There are actually several different speeds a Dak could be governed to; 98 seems to be the lowest, and 118 the highest from the factory. The highest the PCM will take is 256, changeable with some custom flashes. There is some debate over wether this is because of the particular tires; some believe it can also depend on which driveshaft and length of truck.

Since the mandated switch to OBDII diagnostics on any vehicle sold in the U.S., beginning with 1996 model year, there have been "tattle-tale boxes."
The module that deploys your air bag is monitoring and recording (saving) all sorts of vehicle data as you drive. Like an aircraft flight data recorder, it can tell police, insurance investigators, etc., many things about the circumstances of your wreck.
If you t-bone someone at an intersection, and your airbag deploys, properly equipped investigators can access the data in that module and know your speed, whether the brakes were used, and more.

Message: My 96 Impala had a gov on it - & it came with Z rated BFG's !!!
Got rid of it with the help of a Hypertech.
The gov on Chevys is RPM dependant, at least going back a couple
of years. Long story short, Dodge is not the only one with speed
&/or RPM govenors. Seems to be a common feature with OBD-II cars
& trucks.
