Subject: Warped Rotors? IP: Logged
Message: I have a Dak 2000 4.7 Quad Cab and it has warped rotors which pulsate during stops. Can these rotors usually be turned or will they need replacing?

Message: they usually can be turned but they'll warp out again real quick.
replace them with good quality after market rotors and make sure you torque your lug nuts don't just "bull" them down

Message: First off, are you sure they are warped? Or are you just assuming that from the way the pedal feels. Put a dial indicater on them and actually check.
Then read this: http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped_rotors_myth.htm
Finally, go to the Wilwood and Baer Brakes web sites, and see what they have to say about warped rotors, slotted rotors, and drilled rotors.

I have cut many rotors, and yes they do warp and fairly easily. Unless the pad material somehow becomes metal, it is easy to see that you are machining metal.
Machining will true a rotor and cure the problem for a while, but since the rotor is now thinner, it will warp again in less time. Before machining though check to see if the rotor is still thick enough to do it safely..

Message: Rotors will warp under extreme heat, but most pulsing is caused by heated brake pad material sticking to the rotor. Take some sandpaper and go over the rotors then reinstall & drive it to see if the pulsing stops. If it does, you know it was the pads, if not you know they're warped.

Message: All you need to do is do a search on warped rotors and there is probably a million threads about it here. VERY common on these trucks!! You can get them cut, but that will only buy you some time. Rotors are made like crap these days and are now made to throw away.
One thing you need to do is make sure your rear brakes are adjusted properly. Don't trust the actual automatic adjusters. Pull the drums and adjust the shoes manually. Adjust them until there is slight drag as your rotating the drum. Out of adjustment rear brakes seem to be a contributer to the warped rotors because the already under sized fronts will take up the slack of the rear. Regardless of what some will say here, driving habbits doesn't seem to be a major contributer to this problem.
Get a good set of rotors, pads, rear shoes and make sure you adjust your rear brakes at every oil change and you should be good to go.
