Subject: Gibson Header and JBA y-pipe
IP: Logged

Message:
I am going to be installing the Gibson GP301S headers on my Dads 97' 5.2 Dakota, the OEM flanges on the y-pipe are so rotted that I can't reuse the pipe, unless I cut the pipes and install new flanges then weld the pipes back together.
I see that JBA has a y-pipe, Has anybody use these two components together, will the y-pipe bolt to the header, and would it line up with the cat convertor?

Thanks

i went this exact route on my 2002 R/T. It could benefit from larger pipes like the gs headers but i cant complain because the gibson headers and jba y-pipe go together as if they were designed in the same factory.

Joey,
I want to make sure I understand what you said,
You are saying that I can use the JBA y-pipe with the 301 Gibson header.
I didn't understand "It could benefit from larger pipes like the gs headers".
Did you have any problem reconnecting the Cat Convertor to the y-pipe?

Many Thanks for the reply

ME,
I found that Summit Racing has the y-pipe available

yes it will work it worked for me very well. like i said though u will have to eliminate ur precats and get 02 simms for the rear 02 sensors. also, depending on how ur main cat is set up, u may need an actual y-pipe to bring the 2 pipes down to 1 pipe. the jba y-pipe isnt really a y-pipe its actually downpipes because they bring the exhaust away from the header and to the main cat. if u need the actual y-pipe part u gotta go to jegs.com and look at the flowmaster y-pipe which is cheap like 30 or 40 bucks and this will bring it all together. for the whole job ur lookin at around 350 bucks but u will have a much better setup and increased power when ur done. just keep in mine it wont be legal since u wont have all ur cats. im gonna just change mine out when i gotta get the emissions tested and then put it back.

from the pic it looks like the jba converges into 1 pipe....

I have three cats...two pre (one under each manifold) and the third is after the y-pipe....

I was planning on removing the first two and getting a high-flow for the third....that way it still looks legal if they check. Otherwise, emissions only scans your computer, so if I have no codes, I have no problem.

yea but forget the picture. im tellin u it doesnt converge into one pipe it stops right before that point. thats why i added the flowmaster y-pipe right onto it cause it fits it well and is a smooth transition. if for some reason when u get it it does converge into one pipe thats great but the one i got didnt and it had that picture on it.

I know this is a slightly old thread, but I have the Gibson headers already installed on my '00 R/T and the JBA y-pipe sitting in my garage. I don't have the pre-cats like the '01 and newer R/T's so no worry about the simms, and it looks like a relatively easy replacement. However, I took it to the local exhaust shop and they made me some crazy quote of $300+. That seemed a little outrageous considering it would be one weld to the pipe leading to the cat, bolt up to the headers and then screw in the O2 sensor. Any of you have any install amounts so I know what is actually reasonable? I would like to get the pipe put on, just not for that much money. Me, you ever get the y-pipe on your '01?

How did you get your headers installed? The y-pipe install is almost as easy.

I actually did the header install myself with a friend and a lot of scratched and bloody knuckles. The only thing about the y-pipe is the welding part of it. Otherwise it doesn't look all that hard to do.

My pipe isn't welded. The two pieces join just like any other two pieces of exhaust pipe. Some people just prefer to have them welded but then again some people prefer to have most all of their system welded as opposed to using clamps.
