Message: I have a seal leaking in the front of my trans. I think there is only one around the torque converter but not sure. Could anyone tell me if there is more that need to be replaced up front. Any thoughts on how to do this myself, all i have is a floor jack and some tools.

Message: The seal you are referring to is the transmission pump seal. Really no other way to replace it but to drop the tranny. Creative use of a flat screwdriver will dislodge the seal. Once you drop the tranny, check the tranny vent (at the top of the tranny pump housing), to make sure the fluid isn't actually coming from there. Probably not, but you never know. Besides your tools, you just need time and elbow grease.

Message: If I was not to replace this seal and just kept topping it off like I have been doing for the past 3 months will the trans die early. Because the way I see it is getting continuous new fluid, I havnt lost any performance. I figure if I get another 20,000 out of it I will just buy a new APS precision trans.

Message: Typically, if it's leaking, it indicates a weakness or damage to the seal. This will worsen over time no matter how well you watch the fluid. You can try some seal conditioner. It may buy some time. On a leaker, the problem is, the bottom of your truck is gonna be a total mess, and the seal can fail at any time. If you're going down the highway, or in a curve on a backroad, a sudden dump of oil could cause you to swap ends in a hurry. The sooner you get the new tranny, the better.

Message: He means, if you blow the seal going down the highway and dump a lot (or all) of you tranny fluid, your truck may "swap ends", ie. HYDROPLANE. Trust me, not fun.

Message: Granted, I tend to cite worst-case scenarios, but, I've also had personal experience on this, many years ago with a '79 Cordoba. Same type tranny seal. The seal failed in traffic at a redlight. It'd leaked for months, but let go rather suddenly and we were stuck. No limping home. Luckily, no accident.

Message: I've had them go a long time just keeping it full of fluid, And I had one all of a sudden blow out. Dumped all the fluid out Quik. So it's a gamble. When it goes, if you dont have an accident, you will be calling for a tow .

Message: The seal leaked on my last Dak leaked for about a month before it completely let go on the interstate.
The ambulance ride cost a LOT more than I would have ever spent fixing the tranny. I'm hard-headed, but I took something away from this one.
