Message: My son has a 1999 Dakota 5.2 5 speed. He left the lights on last week and run the battery down. I disconnected the battery and charged it for an hour or so. Reconnected the batteries and it started right up. Only problem, is now, it is rough idleing and dies when you slow down while stepping on the clutch. It used to increase the idle speed when you slowed down, now it wont keep running unless you keep one foot on the throttle. This happened last year, shortly after we bought the truck, and somebody told me what to do, but I sure have forgot. Seems to me, I just hooked the battery cables back up, started the truck, without touching the foot pedal, and the truck would move the foot pedal itself, up and down a bit, and kind of "relearn" its idle speed. This time, if I dont push on the foot pedal, it will die. Something is sure wrong, any ideas? I would appreciate any input, or I guess, its off to the repair shop!(and I dont think its that big of a problem, just cant remember what Im supposed to do?)
thanks,
Jim Coady

Message: Hi Jim,
I've got a 1997 318 and had what sounds like the same problem a few years ago. The truck would start, but I would have to keep on the gas to keep the engine running. After letting off the gas, it would stall. It drove me nuts for a month until I figured out the battery had a dead cell and needed to be replaced. Come to find out, sometimes with these trucks a weak battery has enough juice to start the engine but not enough voltage to run the computer.
There's a good chance the battery was damaged by being drained all the way and needs to be replaced. Good luck!

Message: This may be a longshot but it's worth a try (easy and free). With the engine idling, place something (like a folded up piece of paper) under the throttle stop at the throttle body to hold the idle at ~1500 rpm. Then turn off the engine, remove the object and restart. This will give the PCM a new closed throttle reference which it will update as soon as the engine is restarted.
