Subject: rear end troubles IP: Logged
Message: for the last two weeks my rear end has been making a whining noise. it stays steady on accel and decel but with just a little gas to stay a constat speed it gets really loud... i towed my boat about a week ago an on the ramp spun both tires so i'm guessing it's not the whole thing that's screwing up. someone mentioned it may be the ring an pinion. any suggestions as to what it might be an a good place to find the parts to solve the problem would be appreciated greatly.

Message: I don't know if all this is going to help or not......
you might want to say what year your truck is and what type of rear end it is.
Mine is a 93 with 3.55 rear gears. I used to have a auburn type limied slip in it (factory stock)...they don't put the word burn in auburn for no reason. I pulled someone out of the ditch thinking no problem, I got posi (ice and snow that night). Well turns out even though they were both spinning, maybe one wasn't spinning as much, so you start wearing those metal to metal parts out. So, long story short, it didn't do posi after a while because I got stuck in the mud, and I noticed only one leg was spinning. Its interesting that they put a magnet inside in the bottom of pumpkin to catch all the metal flakes (talk about planned obsolescents) SO I replaces it with a after market Aburn, had to grind a little in the pumpkin to get er to fit, upper right I think (4-1/2 " angle grinder). so I ran that one till next winter and we went down to the lake to walk on the ice. well on the way out I bottom out on a snow birm and sat there grinding till the wheels wore there way through the ice and snow till they caught pavement. Well this time I noticed hey, one side is catchin, and the looser one is spinning, auburn aint holding. Bottom line, I should have got a detroit locker the first time, I did the second time. That one doesnt have plates or ring and cones to wear out. Its been in about 5 years now and it don't let loose. It cost about 150 more.

Message: Should have figured to say what kinda truck. it's a 95 dakota 5.2 eng nv3500 tranny and 3.92 gears. the whining still continues but after servicing it (changing fluid) it's quieted down a bit. i think some of the problem was that when i got it the person told me to get both tires spinning he put in friction modifier with the rear end fluid. i think he put too much in an burned up something. anyways long story short i have a full shop (JiffyLube) to take care of it once it goes on me. i'm still hoping it's only the ring an pinion. both tires will still spin with ease on pavement an mud. thanks for the help...an yeah a detroit locker sounds awesome...know a good place for drivetrain parts? it's got 137,000 miles on the stock clutch an it's a little on the soft side.
thanks for any help guys.

Message: I don't necessarilly know if its the best good place, but the price seemed ok from West Coast Differential, I just found them on the internet. I looked at True Trak, Power Trak, Track Loc, and the Detroit Locker's there, and oh yea...the Au"burn". The people I spoke with seemed knowledgable.

Message: oh yea,
what ever you do, don't run with one tire under inflated on a limited slip rear end, it will mess it up. Don't run wih dissimilar tires on the rear end. Make sure the have the same wear. The rear tires need to be the same height to keep the rear end happy on a limited slip rear end.
