Subject: Oil Change IP: Logged
Message: It appears this is a big issue but I just bought a 2K R/T CC and want to do an oil change. It has 55K on it and current oil type is unknown (dealer). I would like to use synthetic but am unsure about gasket issues with Dodge products. I know with my F150 changing over to synthetic created major VC leaks. Are there any issues with 5.9?
Thanks

Message: I cannot say about the 5.9 but I have an 03 4.7L and at 500 miles I changed to a semisynthetic, and then a few oil changes after that I went to a full synthetic. Should be no problem I would guess.

Message: Actually, if synthetics have any effect, it is to make the rubber gaskets swell. Alot of times sludge & grime is the only thing keeping some older engines from leaking. When you put in synthetic oil, it cleans this sludge out and it eventually leaks. The synthetic "found" the leak, it did not cause it. It is simply an issue that needed to be addressed that was hidden by a dirty engine. You're safe to change to synthetics at any time and they do mix with dino oil. So, change away.

Message: Thanks for the info. You may be right about finding the leak. Ford SB's are notorious for VC leaks anyway. I will be doing a synthetic oil change shortly. Gotta take care of the heater core too.
