Assuming a 4.7L engine, some extracts from my Factory Service Manual CD.

P0171 = FUEL SYSTEM 1/1 LEAN
(O2 sensor bank 1 /number 1)

Can be caused by any one or more of the following (if you believe the FSM):

RESTRICTED FUEL SUPPLY LINE
FUEL PUMP INLET STRAINER PLUGGED
FUEL PUMP MODULE
O2 SENSOR
O2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT
O2 RETURN CIRCUIT
O2 SENSOR HEATER OPERATION
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE GREATER THAN 0.92 VOLTS WITH THROTTLE
CLOSED
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR SWEEP
MAP SENSOR
ECT SENSOR
ENGINE MECHANICAL PROBLEM
FUEL FILTER/PRESSURE REGULATOR (HIGH)
PCM

Strange that faulty or malfunctioning fuel injectors are not listed, unless that's considered ENGINE MECHANICAL.

That gives me alot to look into. I already changed the upstream O2 sensor and I plan on changing the downsteam sensor this weekend.

Thanx!!

Jim,

What year and engine size DAK do you have?

I have a 2000 4.7 liter that presented similar problems.

Sorry to get off the subject, but where can you find the factory service manual on cd? I have a 2001 jeep grand cherokee with a 4.7v8 and would like one for this.
Thanks,
Mike

could be mecahical, as for those (mechs) could be a blown intake gasket, bad injector, poor sealed vacuum port (vacuum leak)/.... anything that would get MORE air into the system than what is needed basically. since its only the one side, I'd start with the things that are all limited to that one side... the TPS voltage, and TB and fuel system electrical issues would affect the entire engine, not just one side.

Is the truck running Ok? I was getting the same intermittent codes and the engine was running rich with black soot coming out of the tail pipes.

The problem turned out to be my pre-cat converter O2 sensor.

The strange thing is the reason it failed. On top of the power steering pump discharge line is a pressure switch with a plastic connector. These switches have been known to go bad and leak fluid down the wiring harness which end up coating the O2 sensor wires and harness. Unplug the pressure switch connector and check for oil inside. I replaced this switch which was about 15.00 and replaced the upstream O2 sensor. No problems since then. Sounds crazy but it took care of the problem.

That is very interesting.... When I recently had it checked out at the dealer, I had an O2 sensor code and a power steering pressure switch code. After the dealer reset the check engine light the PS switch codes went away and I changed the upstream O2 sensor. The gas mileage is still very bad and it hesitates at highway speeds. I still have the lean condition code and injector codes. I will look at that plug and clean the injectors this week.

Thanx!!!

Personally, I stay away from rip off dealers as much as possible. You can reset your own engine codes by turning the ignition switch to on (but not start) and disconnect the battery for 20 seconds.

I also had the same code for the power steering pressure high, which is probably when the switch blew. It is easy to disconnect and check for oil in the connector. That oil eventually made it's way to the pre-cat O2 sensor which caused that code, and also poor engine operation.

Sounds like you have the same problem. Fix it yourself to save some cash and good luck.

You were right !!!!!

My troubles were with the pre-cat O2 sensor on the driver side. (I was looking on the wrong side.) My sensor also had power steering fluid in it just as you described. The sensor was very clogged. After cleaning the plug and replaceing sensor all it great!

I can't quite find where the fluid came from. I looked for the plastic plugs you mentioned but no luck.

Thanx for the help!!

Jim,

Replacing the pre cat o2 sensor was the right move, but if the power steering pressure switch was the cause of the problem you must also replace it too. Your new o2 sensor may also fail if you do not.

Between the battery and the power steering fluid reservoir, you will see a black electrical connector on the power steering fluid line. disconnect it and check for fluid inside. If it has ps fluid in it, take the switch out by unscrewing the gold nut and assembly. I bought a new one from the dealer for 12.00 and installed it myself.

OK I will have a look, but how does fluid get from there back to the O2 plug? The pump is up front and my O2 plug is up against the firewall...

On my truck, which is also a 2000 4.7 liter the power steering pressure switch blew and leaked fluid into the connector body and wiring harness. When this happened, I got the power steering code and soon after the engine o2 sensor codes and rough operation. The fluid travels down the wiring harness to the o2 sensor, which causes it to fail. Again, sounds crazy but true.

I think JerryM is right. I have been hunting for a power steering fluid leak for two days and finally figured out that it was leaking from the high pressure line THROUGH the power steering pressure switch and into my wiring harness. At first glance it appears that the wiring harness is leaking fluid...not possible. Thanks for the info JerryM, I will check my O2 sensor, because it has been hard to start for a few days, but no codes.

Eric,

I replaced to power steering pressure switch, cost about 25-30 dollars.

Bought a new pre cat o2 sensor and installed it, cleaned up as much wiring and harness that I could get too, no more problems.

Bottom line- these ps switches are junk that blow and cause engine codes, rough engine operation, and it is hard to figure out the real problem.
