Help! I have a 4.7 v8 and the engine light comes on. I reset it and comes on again a few days later. Also, what about that slime in the oil filler? Anyone have problems with oil failure due to sludge? Thanks in advance for the help!

WHAT is the code it is tripping? without that, its useless. the sludge in your oil filter?? is it brownish tan, if so, it could be coolant getting into the oil. any oil in coolant, or whats the color of your old oil? sounds like somethings wrong, if you're resetting the MIL on your own, stop, let it store the codes, and get it checked out before reseting them!!!!

no, I have some brown dry stuff in the oil FILLER tube. I also changed the gas cap because inspection told me I had a bad gas cap. Would that cause the light to go on? Thanks

well first of all, the brownish tan "goop" in the oil fill tube is normal. all 4.7s do it.
second of all, just about anything can turn on your check engine light, from a cracked evap hose to a misfire in your engine. dodge trucks have a lot of evap leaks. get the code checked out. either take it to pepboys or some store like that and they can probly tell you the code. you mite even be able to turn the key on and off 3 times quick and it might tell u the code where the mileage is. im not sure if daks do that or not, i think they do. turn the key on-off-on-off-on and leave it on. it should read out the code and write it down. then post the codes up on here so wee can help you out further.
it could very well be your gas cap. they tend to leak alot. also when you fill up, if you dont tighten it at least 3 clicks, it could turn on your check engine light.
if the gas cap doesnt fix the problem, get the codes and tell us. if u still have an evap leak, you may want to check all the evap hoses, they crack alot too.

So that brown crap is normal. I was reading about the Durangos that clog up and thought it might be my engine. I'm waiting for the light to go on again. I'm an A/C and heating tech, and I could never figure out that odor that comes out of cars vents when you put on the A/C. Is that the freon or what leaking out? This thing can detect a leak in the a/c evaporator? Why can't they do that for houses? Anyone one to market that and make a million?

no not in the a/c. in the emissions evaporative system, "evap system". if you had freon leakin out, then you would have no cold air. i dont think freon has a smell except for the dye they add when you have a leak.
the evap system pretty much makes sure no gas fumes go out into the atmosphere. i dont know how much you know about the system but its kinda hard to explain in writing. it would take too long. pretty much any fumes in your gas tank are "sucked" into the charcoal canister when your car is off. at the right conditions, the computer opens the purge soleniod and that lets the fumes get sucked into the intake. hope that kinda helps you understand it. so a leaking gas cap could set a code for an evap leak. so could a cracked hose, or leaking canistor, or leaking purge solenoid, or leaking leak detection pump, and so on. theres lots of reasons the code could come on, and those are just for an evap leak. normally its just a cracked hose or leaking gas cap.
