Message: My 99 318 was pinging, so I replaced the distributor cap, plug wires and plugs (5224s), all Autolite. Still pinged.
I tried using 93 octane gas. The pinging went away for a few days but came back. That was back when 87 was $1.20 and 93 was $1.50. Now that I'm paying $2.10 or more for 87, it seems kind of ridiculous that I stressed so much about paying $1.50 for 93.
Then I replaced the plugs with 3923's. The pinging went away for a few days but came back again. I didn't notice any particular increase in power, but I knew I was burning more gas and emitting more fumes b/c of the colder plugs. Plus the pinging!! So I went back to 5224s.
The pinging left for good once I changed my oil to full synthetic Mobil 1 truck/SUV 5w40.
