Subject: 5.2 to 5.9 switch in a 4x4? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dakota club cab 4x4 with a 5.2. What is involved in doing a 5.2 to a 5.9 switch? How eazy or hard is it, and what do I need? and is the drivetrain tough enough to handle it?
Thanks in Advance
Cheers

Message: Did the swap to a Ram a few weeks ago, all I needed was a new PCM, Torque converter, and flexplate. If you have a 5-speed, you may only need the PCM!
Dakotas may be a little different, so I'd get some additional input.
Good luck, and by the way the torque is well worth the swap.

Message: Just did this a little ago. My truck is a 98 Dak 4x4 had the 5.2. Swapped in a 96 5.9 out of a 2x4 Ram. In my case, anything that plugged into a wiring harness had to be swapped from the 98 to the 96 motor. The motor mounts match up. You WILL need a new Flywheel. While your in there do the clutch if you are running 5spd. I did not have to switch out the computer. 10000 miles on the new motor, no probs yet. If you have any specific questions, shoot me an email.

With the Crate motor, you will lose your fuel injection and go to a carb motor. Which means your computer is going to be really upset when it cant find its sensors on the motor. Can we say constant check engin light? (Of course, I could be wrong, Im no expert on any of this.) What tranny do you have? Auto or 5spd? Hmm, let me say this, I can tell you what we did to put a 96 5.9(inplace of a 5.2) into a 98 Dakota 4x4 with 5spd manual tranny. But shoot me your questions and Ill see what I can do to answer them.

Message: Is t Worth it? In a word (or two): Hell ya.
Im running 36in tires with 3.55 gears. With the 318 I couldnt run 5th gear at all. Just coulnt keep the speed up. Now with the 360 I can pull 5th and even accelerate with it. Gobs of power in the mud too. Gas milage not that much different, I havent really noticed a difference. I dont really keep track of it, just how often I have to gas up, and rought milage on the trip meter.
But like I said, and Im pretty sure on this, if you go with the Crate its set up for carb and 'off highway use only.' You might be able to swap in a MPFI intake, but then your getting into a lot of hassle if you ask me.
The way I did mine was found a wrecked Ram (got a buddy in the Ins business) and bought the 360 out of it. The only thing I had to swap other then powersteering, alt, A/C and such, was the various sensors, as they didnt match my harness. Oh, and new 360 Flywheel, no way around that one. Pretty simple really, If it plugs in to a harness, put your old one in its place. Im even running my 318 PCM. This is all based on a 96 360 being put into a 98 318's place.

Message: You can get a mopar crate engine with the bosses for an MPI set up but you'll have to replace the fuel rails, injectors, fuel pump, throttle body, and go to 1 5/8" headers, you won't need a fly wheel the crates come with one, but you'll need a larger torque converter an you'll need to change your transmission to a 46RE instead of the 44RE that ou have. and it would help for a Mopar 5.9 ECU (thats what it was designed for), also a lager radiator, and I would go with electric fanns instead of the mechanical.

Message: I apologze the 44RE and 46RE are 4sp auto's, You'll need to find out if you have a NV3500 or NV4500. The NV3500 is for 3.9L and 5.2L's while the NV4500 was for 5.2L,5.9L, and some V10 applications

Message: justin, i wouldnt swap my 5.2L for a 5.9, but thats mostly because my dakota 5.2 4x4 is a work truck and its got plenty of power for that. BUT...... if i were in your shoes, why not just go 5.9L? im pretty sure the work is about the same. the tranny your truck comes with would most likely not last all too long on the 5.2 anyways. so you might as well just get a 5.9 full setup with tranny from junk yard. i think if your gonna do the work for a v8, might as well lift that extra finger, and go a little farther... its what i would do.
and another thing. 5.9L will run fine with the 5.2L pcm. but they run way better with a pcm from a ram. proper fuel/air mixture and sh!t. ive witnessed it makeing a real difference.

Message: Man am i glad i found this site. Before its to late and my baby falls apart.I read all the posts.I had bought 4x2 automatic 92 dodge dakota sport 5.2L last year.drove it to clifornia and back a couple of times from Ga and boy was it fast seemed like it went to 0-60 in 5.2 seconds got a few tickets not realizing how fast i was going because the peddle was touchy man I fell in love. Here lately everything has been going down hill loss of hp not shifting right and many other things.I dont know much about motors and dont have the money to usually put in the shop like I normally would do.So I desided to see what I could find online that might could help me on the symptoms my truck has been so sick with. And what do ya know I found someone from (DDC)that had already posted the same major problems for me here http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v8/4296.html
After reading all the posts under that topic putting 2 and 2 together now knowing my computer seemed to be the problem to replace to make my baby run like a charm.Ending up here at this topic searching for computer also learning that the computer also has another name ECU Not knowing what I was looking for I went out poped my hood and started to look for something that was big enough to hold a hard disk drive and maybe a cd-rom.Just kidding ,Looking for something that looked like the image I found on the net.I crawled under the truck and noticed these numbers 01.12.94 on the passenger's side of the engine block.I might not know much about motors but I know a date when i see it.Ding!!!Ain't my truck a 92 not a 94?Woundering what was original and what wasnt I Went to the other side and found these numbers 53020006-360.Realizing that it was a 5.9L instead of a 5.2L.I started looking for a Dodge Dakota Sport with a 5.9L 360 magnum with fuel injection.Well for you guys that already know They didnt make any dakota with 5.9L in 92 Well what it all boils down to someone done made the switch on me and I didnt know.Hell I dont want to even think about all the 5.2L parts that those dumb machanics from pep-boys ect done put on it running all this time probably with the wrong ECU.Can someone tell me where the numbers are on the transmission are?So I can see if its a NV4500 The way thinks have been going for me I can guess its a NV3500 cause It sometimes wants to come out and I haven't even touched a bolt on it.
Shakes real bad sometimes.Someone Please Help if I knew what the engine came out of could that type of ECU fix it?Ive searched for dodge trucks and found that the dodge rams have the year and 5.9L in them? Can someone help maybe write down the major things to fix.I dont want no gas hog was getting 350 miles to a tank a month ago.Now Im averaging not even half that.I love my Dakota

Message: I don't mean to hijack this post, but what I ask might be useful anyway. Doesn't the 360 have a higher deck height than the 318? And if so, does that make installation any more difficult? More a question of curiosity- I have not worked on a 360 Dakota, but the 318 looked a little bit tight in the engine bay as it is...

I'm thinking about putting in a 5.9L. Any anyone offer any advice before I dive into this? About all I know so far is the engine mounts and transmission will mount up but what about the flywheel, wiring harness, computer, Just what will I have to do to interchange the two? Thanks in advance for any help or info anyone can offer. peace.

Message: Hey, not sure if anyone looks at this anymore, but if anyone would like to give some advice at putting a 5.9 in a Jeep Grand Cherokee, shoot me a holler... I know that I am talking about a little SUV right now, but it is my baby, and ORVIS edition only made for three years, and i have been throwing money at it to keep it running and just got a two inch lift for her now and was in the process of buying another 2.5 inches for it when the 5.2 started to run hot and leak oil in the anti-freeze... Now i can't even drive it a mile and she over heats. So there is no question if it is getting a new engine, it is just which engine, but from all the posts so far it doesn't seem that hard. ONE MAIN QUESTION. will eveything fit? ex. alternator, water pump, injectors? ALl i get when i buy the engine is the freekin block and heads. ps: the 5.2 did awesome, 236,000 miles on it!!!

Message: everything from the 5.2 should bolt right right up to the 5.9 with no trouble. the only thing is, and you didn't state what year, is the PCM. i know they offered the 5.9 in some year Grand Cherokee's. you'll ned that PCM, preferably from the same year as the chassis.

So do i need a pcm from a 5.9 1998? or can i use my 1996 5.2? also, the drive shaft and and all that and my transmission will handle it right? I plan on putting a transmission in it soon anyways...
