Subject: 45RFE Transgo shift kit IP: Logged
Message: I was browsing the APSprecision.com website and they're advertising a "New" Transgo 45/545RFE performance shift kit. $58 + $7 shipping.
Does anyone out there know anything about this? Even the transgo website doesn't have any information.

Message: Impossible. It would HAVE to be software programming.
Maybe it's a INLINE resistor for the IAT or some type of B.S. performance mod?

Message: There's quite a bit of inconclusive info on this kit, and APS and TransGo aren't talking yet.
On another board, there is one person who claims to have bought the kit, and keeps referencing that he'll need to open the pan to install it, but doesn't seem to want to post the kit contents.
I "believe" that it may include some pump upgrade(s) to improve the line pressure, but as I've said above, it's all speculation.

Message: I found this: http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/Dodge_45RFE_5_45RFE_SHIFT_KIT_p/500-000052930.htm
Looks like you have to pull the valvebody and replace several springs, a couple of valves, a plate and several other parts I can't really identify. And it only costs $36.37 at this site.

Message: Hmm.
It looks lie some springs, some sort of needle valve thingies, and some seals plus that hold down plate.
Not sure HOW that will make a better shift on a tranny that already shift POSITIVE. that sh*t isn't going to remove the torque management!!!
When I FIRST got my truck I was messing with that Torque management wire before I realized it isn't the same on an '03
The mod worked on our 98 Chrysler, so I thought why not on the truck. But no go on an '03
I did notice it had a logical signal on that lead where it changed voltage breifly upon shifting (some sort of feedback from the tranny for torque management?
Anyway I was playing with some electronics one day to cause different DELAYS in the signal.
One time I DID get my tranny to bark the ever living SH!T out of my tires. But there also goes the CHECK ENGINE light and limp mode!
I wish I knew someone who KNEW how the torque managemnt worked so I could play with it again.
When I played with it before i was just using transistors to time a delay. now I've got some microControllers I COULD mess with. I could program then delays down to milli seconds and maybe trick the thing.

Message: Rob, I don't think that is the same kit as the APS/TransGo (although it might be). I saw some discussions elsewhere that the kit you reference is a fix for some other problem, even though it's listed as a shift kit.

Message: I actually called transgo because i was waiting for this kit to come out. I was told is is NOT a performance kit. It is merely a "fix" kit to deal with some common failures in our tranny's. Waste of a long distance call!!

Message: "common failures"???
hmm...I've never even heard of 45rfe failing, let alone having a "common" failure, sheet, if the same tranny can handle the hemi just fine I don't really see a weak point needing to be fixed.

Message: I dont know about common failures but I did have my 45RFE tranny go out at 74,000. Luckly it was under warranty so dodge ate the cost and I got a brand new tranny. But when mine went, I lost reverse first and it clunked when put in gear (hard engagment). But according to my dealer these have been a dependable tranny since day one. He said I had a "unique" situation.

Message: I don't know what failures he was talking about but there's obviously enough of them out there for a company like transgo to come up with a kit to fix it. Just because a tranny can handle a lot of power does not mean it's not going to fail!

Message: There are definitely 2 kits. One is the "fix" kit discussed, and the other is a performance/shift kit (APS).
The shift kit though, from what I understand, will actually require the removal of the tranny to install. It's all hardware, no electronics. Snap rings and valves, that I could see.

Message: I don't see a problem in the 45RFE
Except there is some Torque management by the PCM, but other than that, mine shifts pretty hard when I'm on the gas. Harder than a stock 46RE anyway. I don't think it's worth dropping the tranny to do a kit lie that.

Message: I seriously doubt that someone would produce a shift kit that required transmission removal. Since the valve body controls how a transmission shifts mechanically by controlling the different hydraulic functions within the transmission (in concert with the electronics of the TCM in the 45RFE), normally one only needs to remove, modify and reinstall the valve body to achieve the desired shift properties. I guess it was just wishful thinking that Transgo had come out with a performance shift kit for the 45/545RFE transmission(s) and I'd found a place that had them for a mere $36.37. I guess sometimes we let what we want get in the way of reality or even common sense.
