Subject: 360 5 speed guys? IP: Logged
Message: How many of you have swaped in a 5.9 with a NV3500? Just wondering how well the transmission handles the larger motor. I searched and all I found was speculation that it would grenade. So, if you have done it and it lives, let me know.

Message: Thanks for the reply. I know that there are conversions out there. I am just looking for some input from the guys who have done the swap and how they have made out with the NV3500.

Message: One of the problems with a 5 speed conversion on the 360 is that it is an externally balanced engine. So the Flywheel and such from a 318 will not work. Now if you go in and put a new internally balanced crank in the 360, or an internally balanced 408ci stroker crank, then the 318 flywheel will do it and will surprise you.
Later, 8)

Message: I've been through all of that allready. The truck was a 318 5 speed and now a 360 is in there, with the proper flywheel and all. It is a running, driving unit. My PCM should be back on Monday with the correct mapping and good times are to be had. Just wondering what I can expect out of the NV3500 and unfortunatley the 8 1/4 rear end. At least is is a LSD.

Message: The NV3500 is not a particularly sporty or smooth transmission. But it is pretty solid. The 360/5 speed combo was available in the Ram, but not the Dakota. Never heard anything bad about them. I think with and aftermarket shifter and shorter lever, it would work pretty good.

Message: ... and you know, Duner is out there running his nv3500, with the torque only a blown 360 would run, and it seems to be handling it. In case you don't know of him, he has a daily driver, homebrew turbo on a 4.7, nv3500, that last I heard was running 12's.
From what I've heard, the factory LSD will be the first to go.

Message: I thought about looking into a new shifter, but the truck is just going to be my daily driver. I imagine, if a NV3500 can handle a non N/A 4.7 and be reliable, that I should be ok. Thanks guys.

Message: A lot of its lasting depends on how you treat it and shift. People have gotten away with transmissions that were made for less touque than they had and others have destroyed transmissions that should have held up with that engine combination. If you know how to shift and dont run to sticky of a tire it will probably last forever. IF you shift it without the cluch and like burnouts it there is a good chance it wont. The 8.25 rear should hold out too, although its one of chrslers smaller rear ends, from what i have heard its good for modified small blocks with smaller racing slicks and you get the benefits of less unsprung wieght. Mopar action even did a article on 8.25 buildups, and i think the Dakota 8.25 is built heavier than the car units acording to them.
Plus the ram weighs more than a dak, so if they held up to towing in a full size truck it should hold up to most reasonable abuse in a lighter truck.

Message: I dropped in a 400+hp small block in a 2003 dakota
5spd after I blew up the v6,its been 30000km,4 sets
of tires later and im swapn engines not trannys!!I
never understood why they never used the 5speed,I
recently bought another 5spd as an extra thinking
after all the burnouts speed shifts and drifting it
would granade but still the same tranny, when you
speed shift it kinda feels ruff 1 to 2nd but ive
stuffed that gear a thousand times and still
holding,
