Subject: New BlackMagic 180? IP: Logged
Message: I was looking into a electric fan conversion and was about to order a Lincoln Mark VIII fan when I noticed that Flex-A-Lite has put out a BlackMagic X-Treme 180 fan. This thing is supposed to pull 3300 CFM at 18 amps. That means that I wont have to have an expensive upgrade to the stock 90 amp alt. Anyone use one of these yet? I live in AZ and the summers get a little warm so looking for anyone that has used these yet to give a little advice.

Message: I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and installed the Black Magic 180. My truck overheated worse than before. I think the biggest problem is that the BM shroud covers maybe 80% of the rad. Whereas your your stock shroud will pull air across all all the fins. This was the 2800cfm model but still has the same dimensions as the Extreme, I believe. If you're keen on an electric fan find one that has the same shroud dimensions as your rad core. Water Wetter worked well to bring down the engine temp.

Message: What did you end up doing with your Xtreme 180? I really want to do electric to get rid of the drag of the mechanical fan. Did you end up going back to mechanical? Also what are your temps in that part of the country? Thanks for the response.

Message: I read a posting some time back that there is a thermostat made for the old Ram truck, that improves the overheating on the Dakota.

Message: I am not overheating now. I have a 180 R-Shaw in there. I just want to remove the mechanical fan to improve the throttle response/Mileage and all that jazz. Also I want to do a 2" body lift for bigger tires. There is some talk that a Lincoln markIII fan will do it but this Xtreme 180 pulls roughly the same amount of air on ALOT less amp draw.

Message: Edmonton Alberta,,, thier summer temps are like Phoenix's winter temps.
The most important problem that you need to address with an electric fan is cooling at idle while sitting in traffic. This is where the fan needs to draw maximum air to cool the engine, but will not get maximim power from the alternator since the engine is idling.
I tried several different electric fan combinations on my 350 S-10 15 years ago while at college in Phoenix. I finally wound up getting a flex fan and dual fan combo to keep that beast cooled down in the Phoenix 120+ temps.
I hope the newer fan designs will pull enough air for your engine. Keep an eye on the voltage while sitting at idle, if it goes from 14 to 13.5 to 13 to 12.5 to 12, your alternator will not keep up with the new fan. Even though your alternator is a 90 amp unit, it won't deliver 90 amps at idle.

Message: Thats good advice, Thanks. I was wondering what kind of CFM is needed for V8's There is no published report of the CFM's with a mechanical unit. All the performance sites I have read state that atleast 2650 for a V8. So 3300 should be good I would think. I might rebuild the alt up to a 120 or 130 just in case. I already have a Optima RedTop. I was also thinking of a All Alluminum radiator from Jegs. They are supposed to lower temps themselfs by 15 - 20 degrees.
The only other mods I have planned is JBA Headers with true duals, 2" body lift and a bigger open air intake kit. So I should still remain under 300 hp.
Thanks again for all the help so far. I love this site

Message: I would use the 2650 CFM V8 rating as a bare minimum starting point since your living in a frying pan. The only way to see if the 3300 CFM fan will work is to let your truck idle in the baking sun.
The aluminum radiator is a good choice, I had a dual 1" tube Griffin aluminum in my truck. It would keep the truck real cool,,, except if there wasn't enough air going through it... If you live in AZ there's a shop that makes custom aluminum radiators, found them in a circle track racing magazine. This was 10 years ago, but thier quality was right up there with Griffin radiators. Can't remember the name of the shop???
Have you looked into a Viper fan? I have seen the conversion mentioned here, I think the entire dual fan shroud setup is like $150-200 from the stealership. Heck if it will cool a V-10, it should do nicely on a V-8, plus I think the shroud is close to the size of a Dak radiator.
No matter what you get make sure your alternator can give the fan enough power. The alternator 120-130 amp upgrade you mentioned is a good option. Also find out what the cut-in RPM is for your alternator. If the cut-in RPM of your alternator is higher than the alternator is spinning at idle, the alternator will not be charging :-( I had my stock alternator rebuilt at an alternator shop to cut-in at a lower RPM and also increased the output current.

Message: Thanks DSW, I will make sure to ask about the cut-in rpm. Also, the Vipor fan setup does not fit in the Gen II daks. I e-mailed the tech at SocialDakota a few months back and he said that it will not fit but he may work on a kit but I havnt heard from him since. I am thinking that I will do the Xtreme 180 BM and a nice 2 row aluminum radiator. If that dont work then who the heck knows............
Thanks for all your help

Message: I live in Az, Just installed one on my 98 5.2. So far so good, but doubt it will be enough when it gets hot here. Will let you know. It's been great to run without that stock noisy, heavy, P.O.S.

Message: Perma Cool makes some high flowing fans too. They are universal fit so you would have to make mounts for it yourself, but with one of them you could reuser the stock shroud and mount the fan in the same space the old mechanical unit used to fit. One thing to consider is finding a fan with a big motor, because as things get hot in the engine compartment smaller moters tend to slow down, making overheating more likely. A Perma Cool unit puts out almost 3000 cfm and since you dont buy the shrowd costs considerably less, plus they have a lower amp draw than many fans so they dont put so much strain on the alternator
