Subject: 4.7L Oil capacity IP: Logged
Message: Alright guys, I'm reading up on other posts on this exact topic, but it appears I have a different problem. 2004 QQ w/ 4.7L. I just changed the oil and filter for the second time. Per the owners manual I put 6 quarts in. Started it up, shut it off and and let it sit for a few. Pulled the dipstick, and it was on the bottom of the hash, just above the fill line. Went and checked my notes from my last oil change and sure enough, I put 7 quarts in it last time. So I went ahead and added the 7th quart, and it read even with the top of the hash marks. Anyone else experincing this? Think I have one of the bad stamped dip-sticks that the other posts were talking about? Any input is appreciated. I'm thinking about calling a dealer.

Message: Yeah sounds like you have a bad dipstick... I put 6 qts in mine, and it's allways just a hair (1/16" or less) above the "FULL" mark. Do you have an oil cooler?? that might make up for the extra capacity...
Hope I helped..

Message: I get the same in my 00, 6 qts always puts it a bit high.
Oil cooler a good thought. Also, which WIX p/n filter did you use? I use a 51085 (stock, small Mopar size), but a 51515, which is normally a Ford filter, is reputed to fit, and is quite a bit taller. Ergo, more oil to fill it.

Message: I've found that parking the Dak on a very level surface is critical to reading the 4.7's dipstick correctly.

Message: Thanks all for your responses.
I use a Wix filter from Napa, so I'm unsure of the true wix P/N. But it is specked for the dodge, and appears to be std/stock size. As for the oil cooler, I have the tow and heavy duty package, but don't believe that they include an oil cooler from the factory. And lastly, my driveway is pretty flat, I can't imagine it influencing the oil reading. It appears that I should give a call to the dealer for their thoughs. Thanks again.

Message: I just had the first oilchange done on my 05 Dak (QC, 4x4, 4.7L, Tow pkg) .. ya ya, I pay someone else to do it, getting rid of the old oil is a pain in the arse around here.
Anyway, the manual calls for 6 qts but they ended up putting 6.7 qts in.

Message: I have a 2000 4.7 liter 4x4, and used to put 6 qts with filter change, and it always looked a little high on the dip stick.
Talked to one of the guys at the dealership, and they go with 5.5 qts, which puts it right on the full mark.
I don't think 6 qts would be enough to cause any issues, but would have to look into 7 for sure.
