Subject: Still getting a popping noise... IP: Logged
Message: Ok, so I just replaced the upper and lower ball joints on my 02 Dakota CC, (also did the shocks at the same time as they were going bad already) and there is still popping coming from the front end. If anyone has any ideas please let me know... It's really upsetting spending $900 and still not having it fixed. The popping noise seems to happen mostly on right hand turns, but it also happens when backing out after the truck has been sitting in the driveway all night. The dealer (and now my own tech) can't seem to find the problem, I'd really like to get this resolved as it's been happening for the past 2+ years.
Thanks,

Message: control arm bushings, intermediate steering shaft, loose cab mount bolt, loose or bad steering rack. that's about all that comes to mind right now. i am assuming you had the front end aligned since you changed the BJ's and whoever aligned it didn't find anything wrong?

Message: Yes, the alignment was done and they found nothing wrong... It's really annoying...
P.S. where is the intermediate steering shaft located? and how can you tell if it's the problem?
Thanks for the ideas.

Message: I had the same problem on mine, 02 QC AWD auto 4.7. After a few visits to the dealership, they finally agreed to replace the steering rack (although they'd never admit that it was the problem). After that, noise went away...

Message: Oh yeah, this was after the ball joints had been replaced and the sway bar bushings had been lubed. I had actually expected them to replace the intermediate shaft, but that wasn't it.

Message: Hey does it do it all the time. Mine has a popping sound also. I believe it's in the steering also. But what is wierd about mine is that It only pops when the temp is higher than 60 and it is dry. If it's raining or cold out it does not do it. Any ideas?

Message: My 02 also does the samething. If you lube up the steering shaft between the cab and the rack it will stop (spray lube) What is happening is the cab moves a very small amout (mounted in rubber) the steering shaft moves in and out maybe .003 or.005 that has a slipjoint in it.
Mine has not done it all winter but now it is above 60 it started again.
