Subject: power loss? IP: Logged
Message: my 5.2 seems to run great. however, the other day when i was getting on the highway, i had it in third gear, pedal in the floor, and the truck took forever to get up to speed. i had the o/d off, so i dont get it. and of course, my girlfriend was in the truck, so now she thinks it has no balls.
i had just put platinum 4 plugs, new cap, rotor. wires look near new. one other thing i notice is, it has a little trouble on the low end. i put it in gear(automatic) punched it with brakes pushed hard... wouldnt spin'em.. but when i let off, the thing nearly stalled. i know this think should have way more power. any ideas? thanks

Message: Lots of people have pointed to a clogged catalytic converter when these symptoms appear. It's worth a consideration before you go crazy chasing a number things it could be.

Message: First thing i would try is to get rid of those plugs, try autolite 3923's. Bosch plugs are crap! Next you could check for a possible plugged cat. Try that and let us know

transmission shifts mad early too. no matter where i adjust the tv cable. i found brass chips in the pan. a little birdy told me the tv linkage inside the tranny might have snapped off somewhere. what do you think?

Message: Cut the cat out see how that works and get rid of those plugs. As far as those brass shavings, got me. I know a few shavings in the pan is normal but I don't think brass is.I will talk to a guy that knows more about tranys.

Message: I found brass shavings in my tranny pan at one point too, but that was because I stripped out a tranny cooler line :( Wasn't really a big deal, just replaced a brass nipple and it was fine. I asked a guy in a shop though, and apparently if something is floating around in your tranny pan (as in not sticking to the magnet) it's probably aluminum shaving and that is 99% of the time from your torque converter, just about the only thing in your transmission with some aluminum in it.
As far as the power loss, you may want to check your intake plenum gasket too. Those blow out very often and can lead to irratic idle and loss of power.

Message: It's a gasket that seals the pan on the bottom of the intake manifold. If you shine a flashlight down through the throttle body you'll be looking down onto the plenum pan. If there is a significant amount of oil down there then the gasket is probably toast.

Message: If you crawl under the truck and hit the cat. with your palm and hear crap rattling inside..then the cat. is shot.I had a 99 5.2 with 95,000 miles and a manual tranny. My friends 2001 toyota 4 banger automatic kicked my ass. Put a new cat. in and then he was back in his place...behind me, far, far behind me
