Message: Where is the thermostat? I read that is in front of the intake manifold. Is it where the tube goes from the top right corner of the radiator down to the intake manifold area? I just had my radiator fluid changed and flushed last week for $65. I don't need to empty it do I? that would really suck if I wasted that money before doing this change out.

Message: Ok I read some past threads and am sure I know where it is now.
But the question on the fluid draining still remains. If I pull out the t-stat is fluid going to empty out or am I fine just as long as I top it off with water?
I saw that someone stripped out the threads, how much should I tighten it. Just hand tight and then some or should I put some muscle into it?

Message: You are better off draining the whole system into a clean bucket and then recovering the fluid when finished. I know that even if your motor is cool (like sitting over night) you will still have some fluid spilling out.
Because of the pain in the butt it is to remove all of the old thermo gasket, it is better to not have any fluid standing around so that no old gasket falls into the fluid/thermo hole.
Also, about the torque involved in tightening the coupler together, it should be hand tight then some. DO NOT over do it, but at the same time it should be very firm. Dont worry about the gasket getting squeezed, there are "idiot" nipples on the medal tobe to keep this from happening. Trust me, you will see them.
One more thing, make sure you get ALL of the old gasket off. Leaving any on will only complicate the situation and cause you to go back and do it all over again.

Message: My 00 4.7L had the thermo located on front bottom passenger side of motor. I did not drain the system and did lose about a quart or so of fluid into a bucket.
My thermo housing also had an O-Ring in/on it, no gasket to scrape off...and I did not have to notch my thermostat either. it was a Robert Shaw (T-180 I think) from Autozone.

Message: I barely lost any coolant on my t-stat change, on my 5.9. what was lost was minimal, and just replaced it with straight water. so long as its cold, it shouldn't loose too much at all.
