Subject: coolant in oil? IP: Logged
Message: Yesterday morning it was pretty chilly and dry out. On the way to work I had it wot up to around 80 or so, then I came to a stop sign and noticed the smell of coolant.
I got out to notice that coolant was spilling out of the overflow. Once it stopped it seemed to run sluggish.
After work I noticed that it was sluggish still and the temp got up to 240 before I pulled over to let it cool. During the time I was waiting I noticed that the oil air breather mini k&N filter on the driver side had oil leaking out of it. Like it was being forced out.
I also noticed that my oil cap was gunked up and smelled like coolant. White smoke was also being burned out the exhaust.
After it cooled I started on my way home again, and about 10 miles down the road the engine started to heat up again, only this time I put it in neutral and it revved up and the temp gauge went down.
I have had a little oil burring every now and then but nothing ever too major.
Could this be the end of my stock head gasket? I recently installed the intake manifold gasket + reinforcement kit. Is it now time for some head gaskets? Or something else?
Thanks for the input

Message: could be a warped head.I have seen alot of 4.7's with warped heads, with the same problems that you have listed.

Message: since you asked, the heads are aluminum as opposed to the 5.9's cast iron...lighter weight, however, aluminum isnt as durable and doesnt take quick changes in heat very well. if you've ever put room tempurature liquid into your hot engine, that could crack or warp your heads or even your block.

Message: well, its most definately, 100% sure its a head gasket. i had the exact same symptoms before on my pos ford. go to the auto parts store, and get something called liquid block sealer. it will do mericles. the truck should run normally. they say the sh!t is good forever, but i says its good for 6 months-1 year. good enough to get you by for a while. also, a new head or milling your current one down might be in the near future. let me know how it goes...

Message: I have seen a couple of heads warped to .018", I don't think that any miracle sealer will seal somthing like that. Jay, what kind of pos ford did you have that happen to before? just curious. Anyways the only way to know for sure is to pull them heads of and check.keep us posted.

Message: trust me. liquid block sealer will work. it wont hurt the engine. i had a 4.6L all aluminum over head cam engine. my wife overhead the sh!t out of it. and it worked like magic. if you didnt over head your engine, chances are the leak isnt bad. it WILL work.

Message: Couldn't it just be the new intake gasket that was just installed? I would start with that first before tearing of a head. If that gasket failed or isn't aligned correctly you could get water in the oil. Not sure on the 4.7's but most V8's this could happen. The excessive liquid in the crankcase could cause the symptoms listed.

Message: i highly doubt its the intake. do a compression test. if you get low cylinders, then you know its the gasket.

Message: well its a cracked head infact heads, cracked all over. Guess when i overheated it when my thermo got stuck closed is when it happend.
Oh well, now i just have to shell out some cash to get some performance heads, i am also getting headers too.
I wonder what type of increase in HP i will see with the elderbrock aluminum heads and some shorty headers. I know it will help my S/C breath a lot better.
