Subject: Starter won't loosen from block
IP: Logged

Message:
I am replacing the starter on my 95 Dakota, 5.2L, 4x4. I have the retaining nut and bolt removed; however, the starter is still "frozen" to the block. I expected it to come loose since the two retainers are all I can find holding it to the block.

I have tried striking the starter with a block of wood and gently prying on it. It won't budge. I fear the aluminum and steel have developed a "bond" around the lower retaining stud.

Anyone else run into this? Suggestions are appreciated! Thanks.

That's unuasual in such a short period of time. Try spraying some PB Blaster around the joint and then what it with aboard again.

you need a BFH. whack it a few times, it should loosen it. BFH= BIG F'n Hammer. ether that or try to kick over the engine with the retainers loose, that torque might jar it loose, but do it GENTLY>..don't wanna damage the flywheel!
The BFH method should work, I've had to do it a few times on this type of starter, I work as a tech, and overall, my fav tool is my five pound "beatin stick".. its gooten me out of a ton of sticky situations!

Update:

I had hoped to report I was able to loosen the starter by hammering, etc. Still stuck like it has another fastener some place. Tried all ideas I had. Even turning the engine over (with bolt and nut removed) didn't make any difference.

I will keep at it but I have never seen anything like this before.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.
