Subject: Can I bypass the ECU? IP: Logged
Message: My '91 5.2 Dakota's check engine light is on and I'm getting a code 41. The alternator checked out good and is putting out 75 amps. But I'm not getting over 12 volts at the battery with it running, and my battery is dying. Tried a new battery, didn't help.
Finally took it to a shop and they said I need a new ECU. Or they said I could bypass the ECU, but they wouldn't do the work.
My question is, how do I bypass the ECU? Can I run a wire from the alternator output terminal (BAT) to the positive battery post? Couldn't be this simple could it?
I guess I could buy a new computer, but they're pretty expensive.
Please help if you know - I'm trying not to get stranded somewhere.

Message: go to a junkyard and buy an ecu. sometimes, they are really really cheap from a junkyard. then take it and get it tested. dont try to bypass anything in the one you have. you might end up overcharging your battery. ever think of checking the voltage regulator?

Message: Well, the voltage reg is part of the ECU. I've tried junk yards and they don't have one. A new one is $164 from Napa.
I don't want to overcharge my battery either, but I was hoping the output is regulated on the alternator feed side as opposed to the alternator output side.
I'm really groping in the dark here. I'm no electronics wizard. Just looking for any help I can find. Thanks

Message: Go to car-part.com for lots of salvage yards online. If you don't find it under ECU try PCM. You should find a cheap one there. Otherwise you're going to have to wire up a voltage regulator.

Message: Thanks for the replies. I tried a new ECU yesterday and still had the problem. My alternator's ok, so how can I wire it up to a regulator and the battery?
This thing is driving my nuts!

Message: I have a carbed 91 and I still have the computer in place. To bypass the ECU (just the voltage regulator) you need a older style regulator. I use the Mopar race unit. You just need to run 1 wire from the alt. to the regulator. I will check tonight and tell you the exact connection needed.

Message: Seroj, Aren't you going off on a tangent here? Your Alternator is good, you tried a new ECU and it didn't help, you tried a new battery and no help. Maybe you have something as simple as a corroded battery cable under the insulation. Have you cleaned and inspected the battery cables? Either way, good luck with that.

Message: I agree with Rob - I a known good ECU didn't fix the problem, look for a bad connection or a broken wire.

Message: dear
its altogether a black day for me when my tata 275cng engine not exceeding a speed of 40kms {top speed} we have diagnosed every sensor through the diagnostic tester provided by tata motors india , no code has there on the display. as a matter of fact we have installed a new e.c.u.and the top end was increased to 120kmpl.
kindly assist me how to flash a e.c.u or how to achieve the top speed on the old e.c.u which was installed firstly.
or else any other way to solve the problem
i, remain!
