Subject: 4.7 Oil Pan Removal IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone ever had the oil pan off of their 4.7? I keep hearing about these sludge related engine failures in the 5.2 and 4.7 V8. I have a leaky pan gasket and want to drop the pan in order to fix it and check for gunk in the pan and on the pump. I wanted to know if this can be done without too much trouble.

Message: Not that my advice is very applicable because I have a 5.2, but I would say this to you.
1.) buy a chiltons manual at autozone or something, just by reading it you'd be able to get a good idea whether or not it would be easy to remove.
2.) It'll probably be a lot easier it it's a 2x4 rather than 4x4
3.) If you're really concerned about "gunk" check out this website, best stuff out there. www.auto-rx.com

Message: It's a pain in the sack to get the pan off. I was going to take the pan off to tap it for the oil return, when I decided that everything that had to come out in order to get it dropped I re-considered and just loosened the motor mounts raised the motor a little and tapped it.
Fun project. Duner has dropped his. He said it wasn't that bad if I recall correctly, but eh... I beg to differ. :)

Message: If it's 4x2, shouldn't be bad. If it's 4x4, it's a *lot* of work, because the front axle has to come out. When it does, you may find lots of other stuff you don't like in the process (rusted CV shaft stubs, bad front end parts, etc.). Ask me how I know...
... but I have all nice & tight new front end part$ now ;)
I'm the one that posted the dynamite thing, BTW. It was a really bad night.
Anyway, look for a post I did on detaching the pan gasket, windage tray, etc., the tray & gasket are one piece, and are bolted to the bedplate. It is a real booger to get loose if it's one of the early gasket designs (2000), but it'll go if you're persistent with lots of pry tools. I heard that later designs used a sealant, mine didn't.
Be careful with that lower (structural) cover plate going back together. There's a torque sequence in the FSM for it, if you don't have that, snug all 6 bolts a bit at a time so that it squares well against the bedplate, else you can crack it.
That's all I can think of. Good luck...

Message: I'm in the same boat. I looked at a diagram and don't see any
other bolts holding it in. I think just keep yanking at it. Why are
you replacing your oil pump? Cold knock start? I am dropping
the pan to clean my oil pick up and want to replace the pump
as well. How easy is it?

Message: Did you guys take off the structural dust cover?
Pez, on the oil pump, it's difficult and can be
very difficult.
The oil pump is driven by the crankshaft, unlike
older engines, and you need to remove the timing
chains and tensioners to get to it - after you
pull the pan and the timing cover.

Message: Hey guys I have a 1999 dodge Dakota 3.9 v6 4x4 and I have
to get the oil pan off to replace the pan and the gasket. I know
I'll prob have to raise my motor some. But do I HAVE to take
off my front axle. Or is there a way of bypassing it? I've heard
of some people getting there's off without even jacking the
motor. Thanks!

Message: I am looking at a rusting oil pan cover. After
reading what is involved, I think it's easier to
lift the engine. Time is money. Hopefully I can
find a reputable mechanic to do the job for less
than $1000.
