Message: Hmmmm. When a compressor short cycles, its short of refrigerant (134A in your case). The low pressure switch will cut the compressor off at about 20 psig on the suction side which means you have a leak. OR, if your condensor fan isn't working (electric fan in front of your engine fan)and the high pressure side gets too high, it'll cut it off also. Other things, if it stopped all together, no freon at all or a bad fuse.

Message: I am an a/c tech and the post is correct. How often do you add refrigerant? If this is the first time than just add it yourself and don't worry about it. The system works on pressure, so if it's hot inside the cab it will "use" more freon. Don't forget to run the a/c year-round, because there is oil in the system that lubes the o-rings. Otherwise they dry out and leak... good luck.

Message: I would'nt say it "uses" more, it simply runs at a higher pressure till the cab temp comes down. Remember, Higher Temp means Higher Pressure. I'm not sure what metering device the trucks use either. I don't know if its a piston, cap tube or txv??? Never really worked on auto A/C except to change my Compressor on an old Voyager about 10 years ago and recharge some friends cars, ect.
Refrigeration is fun, I've been doing it a long time too.
