Subject: 5.2 to 5.9 swap, something is missing
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello, 1993 dakota 4x4 extended cab.
has anyone had this problem. I swapped my 5.2 to 5.9 a while back. The rebuilt 5.9 has a bit of a cam in it. To this day I haven't been able to get it to run smooth, and I know its holding back some power. One time it found some extra power, I didn't know where it came from but it screamed...it was like a loose wire reconnected or something. The old 5.2 when it was new would burn em if it kicked down to 1st (automatic)at 30 mph. This one lugs. I think it is missing but cant figure out why. All new sensors and every thing.

Do you still have the stock computer running it? The stock 5.2 PCM will run a 360, just not very well. Look for a Mopar PCM for a Ram 360 or a stock one at the very least. 93-94 model years are what you want to look for.

I had this problem....a long time ago. If the truck is a 93 you will need a 93 D250 mopar performance computer, which they dont make any more. Also Ford 24 lb injectors. This will be like giving your truck 50 more hp. If the truck is a 93 then 94 computers will not run correctly.

Hi,
sorry I was away from the computer. I did buy a 360 computer from KRC performance but that one was screwed up from the git go. They wouldn't refund me or swap with another. Something was wrong in the Idle circuit. I am running a Mancini Racing 318 performance computer. I'm not getting any codes.
I appreciate any suggestions, I'm about ready to go carberator. I got one of those new Mopar Magnum X-type manifolds so to get rid of the Beer Barrel/ leaky if you don't glue it plenum gasket manifolds. Thats been on for a while. I also bent the TVI sensor rod so I could bet a little advance on the gas curve ( ever try that before?????)
Thanks for the responses!!!!!

oh my, my spelling is terrible,
I meant "get" a little advance on the gas curve. Also TVI, I mean't TPI or throtle position indicator. Anyway, there is a flat shaft that drives the TPI sensor, I just twisted it a little so it thinks the throttle is pressed. I noticed while I had it off and the engine running, if I turned if up a little the idel went up and smoother. So I gave it a try, I have no idea if its a good thing or not, but it did seem to make the truck a little more snappy.

I doubt the PCM/injector combo would "be like giving 50hp," but the Ford injector comment is correct. Actually, they're all made by Siemens anyway (unless someone else has started in the recent past), regardless of the automotive branding.

On crack huh? How about going from running 14.20's with a junkyard 360(diff cam)controlled my a mopar 318 computer to running 13.50's by only changing to a 360 mopar computer and Ford 24 lb injectors. How much HP do you think it gained?
I have been hot rodding these trucks for a long time. Had the stock 318 running 11.90's back in 1994 with a 250hp dry kit so don't insult my intelligence. Don't bother to ask me how to make a 250hp dry kit either. I posted on here to help someone, not to get cut on!

check your tampon at the door dude...

the way you wrote it read like you were saying switching injectors alone would net 50 ponies.

maybe my fault.. maybe yours.. who cares at this point.

the point is.. id be willing to bet that the bigger injectors were a waste, and the real gain came from using a better computer for the engine.

Sorry for getting mad guys. I tried the injectors by them selves,360 computer by itself and then all together and it just rocked when you put them together. Wow...This was like 9 years ago! LOL!

I swapped from a 5.2 to a 5.9 and would like to put a PCM in from a 5.9 but I'm not sure what would be compatible. Truck is 1998, ext cab, auto, 4x4. Anyone know what PCM would work?

Actually,
I think I read something on KRCPERFORMANCE.COM about the 24lb injectors. They just pissed me off about the controller I bought from them not working and not replacing it for a good one. It's like I plugged in and unplugged the ones (stock and the Mancini racing one) dozens of times and they never failed, so KRC sucked for me. I guess I'm going to take a chance again at buying another 360 controller

Jon - 5.9 was available in '98; look for a PCM from a Dak that year with auto tranny, 4x4, and maybe same emissions (federal or Cali), if there is anything on your truck that requires different emissions control (for example, my Cali spec '00 has O2 sensors on 2 precats, fed '00 only has sensors on 1 main cat). If you can use either version, federal probably makes more power. Try Car-Part.com, many salvage yards together online.

I think in 1998 the 5.9 was only available in 2 wheel drive, not 4x4. So if I'm correct, what are my options for a PCM?

Looks like you're right about that. You could get a custom flash for your 5.2 PCM, or look into wether anything about the 4x4 is actually read by the PCM for that year.

Was the 5.9 available in the Ram in 98 with 4X4? If so, would that work in a Dakota?

Yes it was and it should work but I am not 100% positive. I am not sure if the 1998 computers are incoded with vin info or not.
