Subject: transmission fluid IP: Logged
Message: I just recently took my recently bought truck(210k miles.) into a mechanics to get my automatic transmission fluid changed. He told me that it was really dark and that it was too late to change it. He followed by saying that since it's been such a long time since it was changed that changing the fluid now would mess up the transmission.
I didn't really like the idea behind his gesture and wanted to see if others backed what he was saying or if I should just get it changed anyways....?
Thanks!!

Message: With 210K I would expect the tranny to go at any time,,, but certainly not because you changed the fluid. If you don't change the fluid there's a better chance of having transmission problems, even on a high mileage tranny. I wouldn't flush it, you don't know what the flushing process will kick loose.

Message: So is that the consensus on this, that I should not change the fluid and let it ride...? Now I know that any trans can go at anytime but I am also pushins around a suburban with 250k and it's ridin strong....

Message: Change the fluid and filter, service it as it should be serviced (band adjustment etc). Also, the newer (ATF+4 and newer) tranny fluids do not remain red until burned. They will turn to a much darker hue within a short time under normal operation. It does not indicate a problem. Not sure what ATF you have in yours. So, service it, and whenever it quits, rebuild it.

Message: Guess I wasn't too clear, Sorry.
You should change the fluid in you transmission as it will not cause your transmission to go bad.
But, don't have it flushed as flushing a high mileage transmission could cause problems.

Message: Now would this include saying that I should or should not drop the transmission pan to replace the filter. Would that potentially mess it up also?????

Message: gen1dak has the right idea. Give it a full service and filter, adjustment, etc. Can only help - not hurt your tranny. There is NO sense changing fluid and not changing the filter. Flush the converter, too. BTW, "dark" fluid does not mean bad. Smell it - smelt burnt? Then it's bad - not just color.
