Message: I forgot to mention has 80,000 miles and I took it to a shop the other day to have it flushed and serviced thinking it was just the pan gaskets leaking but I got home and it was leaking from the front too. Brought it to a tranny shop the next day and they said they wouldn t fix it, said it wasn t worth it and they needed to do a rebuild. Whats up with that, it shifts fine only problem I see is the leak. Anyone think the shop is trying to screw me?

Message: I think the trans is a 46re. the leak could be coming from the torque converter seal, oil pump o-ring or loose oil pump bolts. If your going to do it yourself I would replaced the seal, oring and pump gasket, that should eliminate your leak.

Message: if you dont know what hes talking about, then you shouldnt do this job yourself. get a friend to help you. someone who has pulled transmissions before. trannys can turn into a real nightmare if you dont have a clue on whats going on. nevermind pulling parts and changing gaskets. your asking for a migraine. i strongly suggest you not doing it yourself.

Message: I agree with jay, this does not sound like somthing to tackle on your own. Get some help or take it to a trans shop. Save yourself some aggrivation.

Message: If you decide to pull the pump out by yourself, don't pull the pump with the tranny level. Make sure the pump is facing upwards before you pull it out, that way everything in the tranny stays in place. If you pull the pump with the tranny level, you might get to see what's inside the tranny the hard way ;-(
Another tip, go to a transmission parts store and get the parts and the transmission manual, total should be about $30 but well. Tranny parts stores have manuals specifically for the transmission instead of a manual for the entire truck.
If you don't know what your doing, don't feel comfortable tackling the job or don't read the repair manual,,, don't do it! It's a real b1tch pulling a transmission back out again because it didn't work, or worse you could cause damage to the tranny ;-O

Message: It's not rocket science ladies and gentlmen. Get a manual and go to work. Of course you should know the difference between a hammer and a torque wrench.

Message: I had the tranny out of my '97 5.2 4x4 over winter break just a few months ago (I'm 99% sure it's a 44RE) My front seal (around the shaft of the torque converter) was leaking quite badly, although the transmission shifted just fine. I'm by no means a transmission expert, but do consider myself quite mechanically savvy. It's quite a chore to get the tranny out, which you'll have to do to replace the seal. You'll definitely need a friend to help you if you decide to do it. It took me the majority of 3 days to get the job done, but I was going really slow to make sure I did it right. It was totally worth the time and effort though. Cost me 5 bucks for a socket I had to buy plus a 13 dollar seal, and I have no idea how many hundreds of dollars a shop would have charged me.

Message: Looks like the leak still persists,,, go down to the auto parts store and get a 1 qt can of tranny stop leak, dump it in and top off the ATF, it just might fix the problem.
I had a tranny front pump seal leak that I dikked with for a couple of weeks. I was just about to pull the tranny when said what the he11, I'll throw away $6 on the tranny stop leak before ripping out the tranny. Well that $6 was well spent, it fixed the tranny leak.
I can't remember the exact name of the tranny stop leak, but it came in a silver can with blue writing. On second thought, I think it was called Trans-X.

Message: DSW,
I like your solution -- cheap and effective! I think I might try the same thing. I have a leak that just started at 123K. I was just about to pull the tranny from my '99 Dak myself, but I'll try the $6 method first. Thanks....

Message: i tried the $6 method with Lucas Trans Fix, didnt work , that was about 5,000 miles ago, i just figure i'll buy a used unit with low miles, swap it out and put a trans go shift kit in it. anyone done this before?

Message: Well, I guess you could always get your $6 back on thier money back guarantee... LOL
I really think I lucked out on fixing my tranny leak with the Trans-X, but also think it's worth throwing $6 at any tranny leaking from the front pump area.
I've put used tranny's in several vehicles and never got stung with a bad unit and don't see why a shift kit would cause problems. The only thing about the shift kit is it will modify the tranny's shift points. If you got a bad tranny, put a shift kit in it, then installed the tranny into your truck, you wouldn't know it the tranny was bad or if you messed up on installing the shift kit,,, if things didn't work correctly that is. Though I would install the shift kit before installing the tranny, if you have to take the tranny back thet you will lose the $30 on the shift kit, but that's better than installing the shift kit with the tranny in the truck.
