91 Dakota, 5.2l, 340k, standard diff., auto.: when turning right at a higher than normal speed, I hear a loud knocking coming from the rear; at all other times, it runs smoothly. Was going to take it into a shop- I think it's something in the diff/axle, but I have no idea- does this ring any bells for anyone or should I just take it in?

REMOVE THE REAR COVER ON THE DIFF.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE SPIDER GEARS ARE BAD. IF YOU CATCH IT SOON ENOUGH, THE LESS IT WILL COST YOU
GOOD LUCK.

I'm no differential expert but here's thoughts. The pinion on my 95 dak went into the pumpkin(catastrophic). I speculate that the pinion bearing failed. Before it failed completely it did make noise when turning. Most noticeable at parking lot speeds. It wasn't as noticeable at road speeds 40+. I noticed it at 180K a few people gave me the imagination thing. I had trouble finding shop that that I trusted to look at it. So a year went by. It gradually became more noticeable. I noticed some fluid on the under side of the bed. I figured it would be ok as long as the fluid was up. It would only take a little bit every couple months. About 30mi into a 60mi drive I knew it was done. Needless to say at 210K it lockedup shortly after I got off the highway. If there is any noticeable play at the pinion I think it likely headed for the catastrophic zone.
