Message: It's supposed to do that. It's about the only time the aux fan does turn on. Helps keep it from overheating when sitting in traffic at low RPMs.

Message: I have a 2003 Dakota 5.9 Automatic, with a towing package. Can anyone tell how big a camper I can tow. I am thinking of maybe a 27ft or 28ft 5th wheel no special model.

Message: ray - trucks with the tow package come prewired for electric brakes; but not all v8's have the tow package.
Dan - that sounds about right, I pull a 24.5' fifth wheel with my 4.7 with no trouble.

Message: hey kowalski, what year is your dak and what are the specs. I have a 2000 durango(had to trade my dak) with 4.7l,3.55 gears and 45rfe trans.I have a 16ft camper trailer that weighs approx 2600lbs.My durango really struggles to pull it at hiway speeds. I'm just wondering if I should swap out the gears for some 3:92's.

Message: corjunk - does it really struggle; or just like to pull some revs ? Stock I towed with the same specs as you; the Dak didn't really struggle with twice the weight. The 4.7 does like to rev, though. I've since gone to 4.10, but even with the 3.55 gears, guys with v-10's and diesels I was traveling with were amazed at how well my truck could pull with them. If you do swap the gears I'd go right to 4.10; but you shouldn't have to for that little trailer.

Message: Thanks for the reply kowalski. This durango really struggles with the trailer. The temp guage Fluctuates alot when going up a hill, between 80(were the guage normally sits) and approx 120. Both times that I towed the trailer it was about 27C. I bought the durango used it has a new longblock in it and is in great shape. I was going to pull the condesor out of the way and check for crap sitting in front of the radiator. Other than that I can't figure out why it has to work so hard. Last time we went out we towed for about 40 min and the overflow was boiling over when we got home. It was prety scary because I don't want to cook this motor. Also i have never towed anything before this trailer So any advice is appreciated.

Message: I'd get those cooling issues resolved right away; definitely before any more towing. Could be the reason for the new long block ? We have the same drivetrain right down to the year and I could tow twice that weight in N.H. mountains in July with the AC on and no cooling or power issues...

Message: kowalski, I think I may have found the problem. I was looking at another durango ,same powertrain, and it has a factory tow package with -heavy duty engine cooling and severe duty package. MIne does not have this. Does your dakota have this package?

Message: What is different with the tow package besides the trailer hitch and wiring. somtimes they say the vehicle has a heavy duty cooling system and severe duty service package. What does that involve?

Message: Many of us run the cheap strap on type - they work well, and don't rattle like the clip ons. The fancy, big $$$ ones won't work much better on your narrow Dak,if you can even find them - good luck...

Message: what kind of spark plugs are you running? weird question, and it doesnt explain your overheating. your overheating may be old coolant or bad thermostat or something.
anyways, i ran these bosch platinum 4's in my 93 5.2 4x4. i can say that it made a huge difference,... for the negative. i lost alot of power with these plugs and it seems like my truck even ran rich. when i found out they had no resistance in the plug, i put 1 and 2 together and figured it out. that may be your problem with the power. i would find out what plugs you have. my truck ran fine, sounded fine, and made no abnormal sounds. but i had to floor it alot when towing my 30' travel trailer. truck usta overheat like a sun of a b!tch till i changed out the old coolant. so basically change the coolant and run champion truck plugs in it. might just make your day.

Message: I don't know what plugs i have in it but was going to change them soon. I did dump in a bigger radiator with "max cool" which is the radiator for a trailer tow package. It has twice the core of my old radiator. Planning on towing for a few hours this coming weekend, will let you know how it makes out.
