Subject: Correct Tire Size? IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone,
Got a question for you guys, what is the correct tire size for the 2001 dodge Dakota 4x2? I just got my Blizzak's swapped off last week and the lady at Fleet Farm gave me a 10 min lecture on correct tire sizes for vehicles, which she gives me every year. I have the stock 16" rim's with 255/65/R16 tires on them, for both summer and winter. I use the same rims the whole time because I can't afford a second set right now. I've driven this truck since it was new, these are the original rims. The lady at Fleet Farm says that because the tire size doesnt match whats on the door panel I shouldnt be running those tires. Is she right? Do I need to go smaller, because I really dont want to. I like the bigger, wider tire. It helps with towing and with the 1 ton pallets that I carry in the back for work. (yes I have two extra springs on each side)I'm afraid if I go two a 15" rim, its not going to hold the weight.

For a 4x2 with 16" wheels the 255/65/R16 tires are the "correct" size. This is what came from the factory. What you are most interested in would be the load rating. The factory Eagle LS (on the 16" wheels) have a 106 load rating. Don't go any lower than this. Any equivalent sized tire with an equal or higher load rating won't get you into trouble. Hey, you can even go a little larger on the tire sizing without problems (I have 255/70/R16s on mine).
Don't pay absolute attention to the door sticker if it doesn't jive. My truck had stickers for the 15" wheels and weights even though it was factory outfitted with the 16" wheels and tires. I received a recall to put the correct sticker onto the door panel.

Message: Thanks for the info. Just out of sheer curiosity does anyone know how big I can go with the 16's with out causing problems? I know the 4x4's are taller than mine, but how big can I go with my 4x2? Thanks

Message: Solutions: take the sticker off the door jamb or spring for a set of cheep steel wheels for the winter.
