Message: I got 88 dakota V6 want to change to a V8 what year V8 would match everything under the hood and tranny. I do need more power for towing and what model tranny do I have it is a 1988 dakota 4x4. Do have to change the radiator and also I will buy a sick , high milage , or worn V8 engine that will fit the truck thinking of 90 and up or whenever they started to install V8 engines in dakota.

Message: 1992 was the first 5.2, 93 for the first 5.9. yes you'll more than likely have to swap the radiator, and the tranny too. for the expense, you may just consider the tradein route, but whatever floats yer boat... keep in mind that the suspension is tuned to the weight of a v6, and will sag more for a v8. that will affect towing capability too, but not sure how much. what're ya towing? heavy loads, light loads? automatic tranny or manual? manual would be the AX 15, auto would be the 42RE according the the Mopar Street Truck performance book... you might consider getting that if you're serious of the change... it shows a bunch of breakdowns for each style tranny and engine types.

Message: Matt - 92 wasn't the first year for the 5.2. It was the first year for the magnum. They had the 5.2 since the first year or second year.
Rusko - You might be better off getting a used 92' and up dakota with the V8. I'm sure it wouldn't be terribly hard to put a 5.2 magnum in your truck but it will be a pain in the ass. Pre-magnum engine (without multi-port injection and re-worked heads) found in all 91' and lower dakotas just don't put out near as much power as the magnum enines.
Sell your truck and get a 92' or up and you'll come out on top then if you were to try and swap engines.
