Subject: Whats the cost 2 have a HO Cam installed IP: Logged
Message: I fully understand that prices can change from location to location but If i can get my `05 Dakota a HO Cam what would it cost to have a performance or engine shop install it for me?
Another Question, How long does it take also to have it installed? Is it a 1 day thing or a few day thing? I need to know so i can plan around not having a ride for those days.
I've read that the HO engines require the 93%Oct as well is this true?
Theres no way that i could do the install myself (disabled) so thats out of the question.
I'm also looking for other suggestions on Performance Mods for my 05 Dakota I prefer Bolt On Options if Possible. I've checked out Superchips.com and as of yet no chip for the `05 Dakota.

Message: I am in the process of having the HO Intake and Cams installed at a local speed shop too...they have quoted me 8 hours for the cams and 2 for the intake...the price for the Cams is $240 and the intake is $175...the labour rate at the shop I use is $75/hour....this won't be a cheap upgrade for me, as I am in Canada so I have to pay exchange on the US$ and shipping so the total price for me is about $2,000 (parts & labour), I am also thinking of having them install an ASP under-drive crank pulley while they are at it. I plan to leave my truck one day and pick it up the next...
Hope this helps...

Message: That's 2K CAD$....I don't know what your shop rate is wherever you are, but your parts will be $400 (+ shipping depending on who you buy from), I had inlcuded the crank pulley in my estimate too (another $300+)....my speed shop is also screwing me on the cost of the parts...I may order them and have them shipped to me direct, and then have the speed shop bolt them on..I would think depending on the labour rate at your speed shop you are going to drop over a $1,000 for yours..
hope this helps...

Message: Jimbo,
Where are you located at?
If your near Mobile, AL I can hook you up!
No you don't have to run a higher octane gas.
It took the guy that installed my cams 2.5 hours because the engine was still hot.
Hope this helps ya,
Later...

Message: There's no way this should take 8 hours, 2-4 hours is more like it. This doesn't mean you have an HO engine, still missing higher compression and ignition advance; you'll be fine with regular gas. Even with the extra ignition advance I have in mine, I only need premium fuel for towing.

Message: Big Dog, I think you're getting ripped off big time. You could take a vacation in the US and have your cams/manifold done at that time and not spend the kind of bucks you're talking about. I did my own for about $240, I only got the cams, wedge tool and supplies. I didn't see any need for the HO manifold but, I did go to the '04 HO manifold later on.

Message: Does it matter for the `05 Dakota's?
If i'm going to have the cam done i think i might as well have the manifold done at the same time,.. i mean right? why not?
Okay,.. I've searched the web and cannot find a cam part # or manifold part #.
If anyone happens to have these 2 part numbers or a Website to to the parts for the 05 Dakota Please reply.
Any others out there that have done this?
I really like the idea and for Cost vs. HP ratio i think its worth the money. still looking for a cool air intake as well.
Thank you guys for the help.

Message: dakotajimbo do not waste your money on a manifold, your 05 has a superior manifold to the older 02 h.o. manifold that everyone mistakenly installs

Message: I would highly recommend against anyone trying to swap in any of the older HO manifolds into a '05 or newer 4.7. There's quite a bit of difference in the '05 manifold and wiring harness. It can probably be done but, I think it's too much trouble for the gains you may or may not get.
This site has excellent pics of the manifolds. You can compare your '05 and see what I mean: http://www.wjjeeps.com/manifold.htm
Here's a good place to get the cams from: http://www.buymopar.com/store/jeep.html

Message: Marty at KRC did my cams in under 2 hours. Anything quoted over 3-4 hours by a mechanic that knows what he is doing is a ripoff in my opinion.
After reading so much on the pros/cons of changing out the intake too, I decided not to bother with the intake.
The HO cams were noticable right away but once I added the SC tuner, my truck screams.
