Subject: 239 to 318 swap IP: Logged
Message: I have an 88 dak 3.9. Windowed the block thanks to a rod that wanted its freedom. Well I have been calling junkyards left and right and for the price of a 3.9 I could get a v8. I have found a 79 318 out of magnum. I am curious on what all is entailed in the swap ... I would assume the need for different Frame mounts(also assume that the holes are alreasy in the k member). Anything else i will need to plan for? being an older motor im sure i can figure out the simple wiring( but tips are appreciated) also will the tranny on the 3.9 work on the 318 .. i believe it to be a 727.. got the truck a week ago and blew it up already. and can i just disconnect the wiring on the fuel pump and use the mechanical pump without removing the electric pump. and will the stock radiator sufffice for the added cubes? please help me out...
thanks,
Tim

Message: Also, I forgot to add; may be interested in a CHEAP 3.9 if anyone in MI has one laying around. may consider shipping depending on cost. Just tryin to get her back on the road for as little cash as possible.

Message: Dodge did this with the 1989 Shelby Dakota. They used stock V6 Dakota Sports (including the radiators), swapped engines, added fans, and a few other little details.
You need the bolt-in kit from these guys:
http://www.engine-swaps.com
The holes are not pre-punched in the K-frame, since, when the Dakota was planned, some idiot believed the V8 was on the way out and convinced the Board, so no V8 plans were factored in.
If you plan on using the stock radiator in the stock location, you will need to mount electric fans in front of the radiator...there's no room for the belt-drive fan with a V8. The bolt pattern for the V6 and V8 are the same, so the tranny will bolt up. Most likely, you have the 904 type tranny.
I think you could do the mech. pump thing, but why?

Message: Thank you for the info. The electric pump is high pressure fuel injection, and Im trying to keep this as simple as can be. and simple is kinda of out of the question, but still trying my damnedest.
Thank you,
Tim Mundt
