Subject: 89' will not go faster then 70 mph IP: Logged
Message: Ok i have a 1989 dodge dakota 3.9 v6 which i just bought about 4 months ago and has 57,000 miles on it. When I go on the highway it will shift into the 4th gear and will just stick at about 2k rpm and will not go above 70mph. Also on a side note it has very slow acceleration going up hills. What can i do to fix this problem? Thanks ahead of time.

Message: I have a buddy at work who owns a 97 Ram. He was having the same problem but much higher miles, about 180K. He thought the engine was shot and was about to replace it when I suggest changing out the catalytic converter. Sure enough, it was clogged. After that it ran like new again. Saved him a ton of money. So check the catalytic converter to make sure its not clogged up.

Message: same as above... I had an 98 r/t, when on highways for qa distance it started doing the same thing, then after an hour or so more it'd just cut out... seems the factory cats are crap, and mine got twisted sideways inside the casing, so when it got hot, it clogged off the exhaust.
Id start with a look at the cats too!

Message: I'll have to check that out Saturday or Sunday when ever I get a chance and I hope that fixes it because I really don't think it is the engine with only 57,000 miles on it. Thx for the help

Message: Loss of top end and power on hills can also often be a dirty fuel filter.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way
