Subject: Sway bar bushings IP: Logged
Message: 2001 4X4 QC 4.7 The sqeaking noise from my truck in unbelievable, loud enough to be heard over the stero. I've done a search and its not due to dry weather, I live on the West Coast of British Columbia. Anyway, I'm looking for neoprene bushings for the front and back sway bars. No one in my area (Vancouver Island) seems to carry them.
A big outfit in Vancouver said they may be able to get them but they need the diameter of the sway bars.
I'll measure the sway bar after work and see if the place in Vancouver can get them.

Message: Try Energy suspension, they have a website, they sell urethane bushings for pretty much the entire front and rear suspension, but you need say bar diameters...

Message: BTW, you may want to investigate the ball joints too they are famous for failing out on the Dakotas, and produce a noise like youre describing too...

Message: SS, I don't think you want neoprene bushings but rather urethane. You can buy greaseable bushing kits in many different sizes. You'll need to know the sway bar diameter and bolt spacing for the bushing bracket. Here's one source:

Message: Thanks for the responses. I have already had the ball joints replaced (recall). I went to the dealer yesterday to complain about the noise. The parts guy said there was nothing he could do because the warranty had expired. I mentioned that I came in before the end of the warranty and they did some work on the sway bar that may have included the bushings. Again the parts guy said no.
I then ran into the mechanic that has done almost all the warranty work on my truck. He said he did recall someone else doing some service on it. The mechanic punched up my name and found out that another mechanic had "removed and greased" the bushing. The mechanic that usually works on my truck said there's your problem, never grease bushings. He offered to install new ones for free, I have to pay for the bushings. Seems fair to me. The parts guy didn't look to pleased. Nice to see there are honest (mechanics) around.

Message: My 2001 has poly bushing from the factory. After 65K miles, they are still on there. Once or twice a year I have to grease them, or else they squeak like a million rabid mice.
It's a very simple job. The only tools you need are a 1/2" socket.
The bushings are donut shaped, and slide on to the end of the bar. They are held on by a saddle shaped cap, that attaches the bushing to the lower A-arm. All you have to do is crawl under there and look, it's pretty obvious.
With the truck on an even surface, remove the bushings and clean everything with plain soap and water. Doesn't have to be spotless, just clean. Then apply a light coat of Mobile 1 synthetic wheel bearing grease. It must be a synthetic grease, no petroleum products. Put everything back together and you're done. Whole job takes about 30 minutes.
